Willi m Wallace.
Of the birth and family of Willism
Wallace very little is known. The pop-
ular.concention of the hero is largely
fictitious, and is mostly deris'ed /from
the metrical writings of Blind Harry, or
Harry the Minstrel, who appears to
have lived aboat two centuries after the
time of Wallace. His name suggest § a
Welsh descent, but he seems to have
been one of the knightly race establish-
ed in the south-west of SCotland. The
commonly-receiVed picture of -Wallace,
as a Scotch Highlander in kilt and
feathered bonnet, is as ridiculous a mis-
, representation as Cala well be imagined.
In personal appearance he was probably
very similar to the Englishmen «on the
other side of the border, and judging
from the part ot- Scotland where he is
thought to have been born, -it is .prob-
able that he belonged mainly to the old
British stock. In any case, however,
his feeling was intensely national, and
therefore strongly opposed to the Eng-
lish invasion. He is said to have been
a man of enormous stature and prodigi-
ous strength, and, although we must
allow for a good deal of legendary am-
plification in the accounts of his exploits,
he was doubtless as great as hero as ever
slrew a sword in defence of violated in-
dependence. Wallace was the leader of.
the second insurrection. At the period
of the rising, he was an outlaw, owing
to his having killed a young English-
man of high position; and he was prob-
ably known to his countrymen es a man
of courage and resource. 1411w ard Was
then in Flanders, and the.Earl of Surrey,
seeing that the national revolt was seri-
ous, led his forces to Stirling, where, on
the lith of September, 1297, the41 were
totally defeated by the Scots under
Wallace. The array of the latter con-
sisted principally of men drawn from
the maritime districts north of the Tay,
where the population was mainly of
Anglo-Saxon otigin. - There can bp no
doubt, howeve a that a large , part of
Scotland was united in opposition to
Edward, though the resistanp was
naturally rather in the south thah in the
3aerth. Wallaee handled his army with
admirable skill, and his victory placed
him in the. undisputed position
of national leadership. He acted
as "Guardian of the Realm "- in
the name of Balliol, and his authority
was universally accepted.-Cassell's Il-
lustrated Universal History.
A Princes.'s Beautiful Smile.
A corresponilent of the Spectator gives
the following interesting incident, one
of many during the late royal visit to
Ireland: "The Prince and the Princess
were nearly due, and • the streets were
packed with people. I took my stand
in College Green, holding on tight by
the lamp -post. Close beside me, at the
edge of the curbstone, stood a woman
bent with wee, miserably clad, with
snow-white air. She held a meager
paper of pins and a few boot -laces in her
wasted hands. She was the barest fig-
ment of the hawker -beggar, whose exist-
ence is a constant struggle or compromise
with the - police. The crowd -thrilled
with expectation, the royal cortege came
up, without the distracting rapidity that
is the London pace for princes,- and, as
the carriaae fcar aaliii`b1
t'e were,all look-
ing passed my lannarioe i the eyes of the-
Princesa of ‘Vales fell u on the figure of
-)
the aid woman, beside it. A quick look
of compassion -the pity that has no dis-
dain in it -passed over the Princess's
face, and then a swift, bright sinile.
The next instant she was gone, and the
old woman, 1 down whose wrinkled

-Some trout& is likely to grow out
of the permits gu
ranted by the Council of
St. Marys list 'December, lb certain'
parties for the erectionofwooden build-
ings. Mr. J. D. Moore, it seems, has,
stated that unless the. Council compel
Mr. Sulley to *comply with the• condi-
tions of his permit, he will sue the town
for damages already sustained through
fire originating those wooden build-!
ings and destroying a portion. of his pro-
perty. Here the matter rests for the
present. There seems to be only one
course open to the Council in the pre-
mises, and that is a strict enforcement.
