• A Novel Temperance Society.
On the night of December 31, 1883,
three young, men sat around a tavern
tee in Georgetown, a little village in
Connecticut. They were intoxicated,
end were watching the old year out. As
the clock struck twelve, onetof the young
inensaid ; "Boys, the new year is here;
now let's swear off, and form a temper-
ance society." The others in a spirit of
jun, agreed. The articles of the associ=
ntion were then and there drawn- up:'
They were similar to the rules of other
temperance organizationnwith one ex-
neption. The clause oontaining the
pledge had the following penalty attach -
.en "And any one of us who shall drink
any intoxicating liquor,, for any puirse
whatsoever, between now and midnight
of December 31st, 1884, shall be tarred
end feathered."
This clause, becoming known, gained
the club the name of "The Tar and
Feather Temperance Society." Meetinge
of the society of three were frequently
held. Gradually applications for mem-
bership began to pour in, and before six
months had passed the society numbered
-thirty mem. bers. The year of abstinence
expired on -new year's eve, and a grand
ball was given by the society, to Which
a large number of the best people of the
place were invited. The hall was filled.
- At midnight the president announced
the pledge had expired. By a unani-
mous vote it was renewed for another
year, and seme twenty names were ad -
nen t the roll. The peculiar penalty
prOves.an attractive advertisement, and
the matter is the talk of the neighbor-
hood. Nearly every resident wears the
Society's badge, The badge is a blue
ribbon, with a hump of tar filled with
chicken feathers attached.
All Sorts.'.
-A ton of gum arabic is used weekly
at the Government envelope factory at
Hartford, Connecticut.
-It is said that a pepper famine is
threatened. The world consumes about
22.000 tons yearly.
-The London Lancet has compiled a
list of more than 25 cases of broken
banes, or equally severe injuries, en-

of last fall and this spring.
-The superintendent of a stone quar-
ry near Philadelphia, who had made
himself particularly -obnoxious by his
tyrannical restrictions upon the laborers,
was recently caught and whitewashed
by the wives of the workmen.
-Says the Baptist: " A well-known
pastor lately said he had never forgotten
one petition a good old deacon often
lite& in his prayers: 'Lord help us to
remember what we ought not to forget,
and to forget what we ought not to re-

-The Brooklyn bridge was opened to
the public. May 25, 1883. In the two
years just completed, over 26 million
people have crossed on the promenade
and in the cars, 1,287,000 vehicles
passed over, and the total earnings were
$950,474.46,
-The Andaman Islanders believe that
their deity lives in a big atone house,
and that his Wife is a green shrimp. A
small body of heretics asserts that the
deity's wife is a red shrimp, but they
are regarded as of little account, and
are vigorously persecuted on general
principles. -
-A law has been proposed in Uriel
guay making it a misdemeanor for al
newspaper to publish any details about
suicides. A heavy fine -is to be imposed
on violators of the law. The idea seems
to be that publicity in the matter sug-
gests suicide to ethers.'
-At the last extension- of the burgle
franchise in England, an old worthy be-
longing to the West of Fife, being on
th& roll of Voters, was hotly canvassed
for his vote by the contending parties.
But his usual ',imply to all solicitations
was: "Na, na, there mule o' ye'll get
it. I ha'e waited 50 years for a vote,
and, noo that 1 ha'e got it, I mean to
keep it."
-An English paper says that "there
is a queer christian churcjh in New Zea-
land, built of logs. Its decorative sym-
bolism inside consists of a flaring por-
trait of Mr. Gladstone and a page from
one of Mr. James Peye's novels. The
natives meethere once a week. and
chant the Decalogue and the Lord's
Prayer, under 'the idea that in some
mysterious way- they, ate big medi-
cine.'"
-The Cincinnati Inquirer says that a
professional sport recently estimated the
number of nien in Cincinnati whQ need
by gambling -that is, nen who did
nothing but gamble, and never earned a
cent Zany legitimate businese-at 1,000.
This included gambling -house proprie-
tors, employees, cappers, outside men,
etc., but it did not include those who
combine business with gambling and the
many men who play poker beyond the
reach of police regidation.
-A Washington correspondent of a
New York paper says that the $5,000,-
000 package, which so many visitors to
the treasury vaults in Washington
have reverently held for a moment, was
opened the other dq,y, and was found to
be a huge joke. It simply contained
three or four heavy old Government
documents, such as would sell in a junk
shop for two cents per pound. The
package weighed 15 pounds, and as old
paper its value would be 30 cents. The
package was Carefully tied up again, and
it -will continue to be used to deceive
brides and other visitors.
-Andrew Baker, of NeepaIva, came
very near taking a sudden j urney to
regions unknown a few days ago. He
slid backwards while shingling the Royal
stables and caught on the edge of the
reef. Andy says he was not afraid of
being hurt but he did not like to break
the agricultural implements scattered
over the ground.
-The lightning struck two houses in
Portage la Prairie on Sunday, the 2nd
ill8t The electric fluid came down the
chimney in Wm. Hatch's houseand
stunned the children who were sitting
neer the stave. In Mr. J. Coglan's
house it came down alongside the chim-
ney, tearing a hole in thee roof in its
passage. Fortunately neither Mrs. Cog-.
tan nor the children were in the kitchen
at the time, though they had been a very
few minutes before. The room was
filled with smoke and traces of the dam-
age caused by the fluid Were visible in
its track.
-Professor Buell has accomplished
wonders in the photographing line at
Regina. While the Riel trial was in
progress and while the prisoner was ad-
dressing the jury, he photographed the
interior a the room,. Everything turned
out perfect in the picture -from the bald
heads among the audience to the judges

on the bench. In fact, he photograph
is so !perfect that the lettering on the

-The Fort McLeod Gazette says:'
Mr. W. S. Lee, who has a ranche right
close up against the mountains, was in
town this week. I is well known that
Mr. Lee has been experimenting with
all kinds of fruit tr es and vines. It is
particularly pleas' g to know that his
efforts are rneetii g with great suc-
• cess. His fruit t ees are very roung,
and do not of co irse yield fruit, but
they are growing well, and are in a
thriving condition. Sonse of them blos-
somed this year, and one young apple
tree had oneapple oii it. He has plenty°
of raspberries and eurrants, and had all
the cultivated strawberries and cur-
rants he wanted, s me of them over an
inch long, and nearly an inch in diame-
ter. Mr. Lee is demonstrating that
almost every variety of fruit which will
grow in ‘Eastern Canada will grow to
perfection here. It is only a matter of
time when fruit, w doh is now an expen-
sive luxury, will be quite common. We
hope the time will e short.
