A New Departure in Weddings.
A novel ami sensible deviation from
-the stereotyped, forms of wedding cus-
toms was recently made by a couple near
Troy, New York. It was a home .wed-
ding, the guests being only the relatives
.and intimate friends of the couple, but
they were sufficient in mi nber to fill the
house. Each guest was welcomed by
the bride, IN -Ito was attired in simple and
befitting costume. When all the guests
bad rrived and the hour fixed for the
ceremony was readied, the groom, who
as conversing with friends in another
part of the room, stepped up to the
brides side. The lady quietly left the
group of relatives with whom she was
talk-in:4-, the two took their places before
the ef-erg-yman, and in a few moments
were made one.- -Chicago Times.
Dutch Table Customs.
A correspondent of the Springfield
Republican finds the Dutch table cus-
toms very droll, as Diedrich Knicker-
`eocker did before her. She dined with
the family of a Professor at the Hague.
As soon as those at the table were help-
ed they cut up all that was on their
plates, and then putting their knives
down. leaned on the table with their left
hands, and with their forks disposed of
the food with celerity and without in-
terruption. At supper the hostess ground
and cooked the collets at the table; and
the butter was taken with individual
knives out of an earthen pot. Cheese;
was served and secured in a similar man-
ner,: and. was smeared over thinkslices
of buttered bread. When the eating was
finishedeeverybody eat still and watch-
ed. the hostess wash thealishes, w-hich"
she did at -the table, using the snowiest
of napkins. without wetting a finger,
while the master puffed a cigar.

Scientific Miscellany.
THE THEORY oF VACCINATIO?:. -Prof.
Tyndall suggest that, justasthe soil
may be so effectually robbed of some
essential ingredient by one abundant
crop- as to be incapable of producing
another, so in the human system a para-
sitic disease may so completely exhaust
the blood of some ingredient necessary
to the growth and propagation of the
parasite, that the production of a second
crop in fatal or considerable quantity
may be impossible. It would thus ap-
pear that protective vaccination or
inoculation is simply the introduction
into the blood of weakened and com-
paratively harmless disease germs to -
consume the material which might be-
come food for similar germs in a more
vigorous and dangerous condition.
Wisp WoliK.-A gale at East St.
Louis in 1871, according to Mr. C.
Shaler Smith, overturned a locomotive,
exerting a force of no less than 93 pounds
P er square foot. At St. Charles a jail
was destroyed in 1877, the pressmse re-
quired being 84 pounds, per square
foot. At Marshfield,- in 1880, a brick
mansion was levelled, the force neces-
sary:.being 58 pounds per square foot -
Below these extraordinary pressures,
Mr. Smith has instanced numerous cases
of trains blown off rails, and bridges,
etc., blu-wn down by gales of 24 to 31
pounds per square foot.
&a -nun Litarr.--Successful experi-
ments in distributing the electric light
to !-great distances have been made in
connection with the Turin Electrical
Exhibition. A Siemens machine of 30
horse power generated a current which
was:simultaneously used by several elec-
tric light systems spread over a circuit
of about 25 miles.
A Novineay. A motor, driven by
small charges of gun -cotton, is an Eng-
lish novelty. It is said to be applicable
wherever small powers are required.
Gasete Wonme. According to Mr. F.
E. Beddard, a London zoologist, earth-
worms two feet in length have been
found in the British Isles, and various
species as large or larger are known to
exist in Smith America. Western Africa,
Australia and New Zealand. The larg-
est: -species known, however, inhabits
SoulICAfrica. Forty years ago a speci-
men was described wIdeh measured six
_ -
feet two inches in length. but it seems
to have been nearly forgotten until the
other day, when a gigantic creature of
the -same species was sent to the London
Zoological Gardens from Cape Colony.
The bmgeet measurement of this worm
yet taken reaches six feet five inches,
its diameter being nearly half an inch.
Mosey Veessteetox.---A short time
since Paul Reinsch discovered several
kinds of minute plants ----including two
algae whieli had before been unknown -
growing upon coins after having been
long enough in circulation to receive
thin incrustations of organic matter. A
Hungarian botanist, Jules Schaal--
sehmult, has more recently found the
microscopic growths upon paper money,
even the cleanest specimens not being
free from them. He has detected seven
species, including although they are
rare -the two new algae described by
Reinsch.

able photographs of a pistol bullet in its
Right- -under the illumination of an elec-
tric spark- have been secured by Prof.
E. Maelt, of Prague. He has also
p110-to-g-raplie.d the air streams, which one
may see over a Bunsen burner placed in
sunshine ; and has even obtained pic-
tures of waves- of sound, these last being
made visible by a method' in which ad-
vantage is taken of the irregular refrete-
tion of light by air set in_ vibration by
sound.
AN I M EN Mor'NTSEN. A French
astranomer has found tesasone for be-
lieving that a circular protuberance.- -
presumaldy a volcano which exists in
the southern hemisphere of Venus, has
an elevation of not leee than seventy
miles. ['le regards such a vast moun-
tain as not incompatible -with the
planets voleanic nature.
-The old beggar woman, Mrs. Neal,
win) died recently in tin. home for aged
women, in Toronto, it has been ascer-
tained, was a beggar of talent and pro-
miseuoue mendacity.. She was the widows
of a tailor in Toronto. After her hus-
band's death she became a pensioner on
the bounty of a wealthy Toronto mer-
chant, now deceased. who was not more
•
widely known for his success in business
than for his liberality to the deserving
pour and needy. Since this gentleman's
death by accident it few years ago, his
wife continued the bounty by making a
very handsome monthly allowance for the
aid woman'maintenance at the home.
It has also transpired since Mrs. Neafs
death that, unknown to the lady above
referred to and to each other, a number
of societies and individuals had been
contributing to her support, each one
being ingeniously persuaded by the
shrewd old woman that he, she or it was
