Vevrs Notes.
—Waterpreof baskets are inade by
the Indians of California'. They _are
woven from a kind of willow that grows
en the mountains 80 miles east ;of Los
Angelos. The baskets are said to be
light and are better than tin or galvan-
ized iron for carrying water
—Discoveries in photography are keep -
fug pace with electrical Inventions, and
it would be difficult to define the meter
and bounds- of either. The latest tri-
umph of the art is the photographiug of
e bullet in its flight from a gun barrel.
ecientifio man, writing from
Tlorida, apeaks of the great advantages
houses have there, as well as in South
,Alabataa,in being built npou pillars
and havieg no cellars. The cellar
atmosphere is a prolific souece of ditie
vase, and increases by 5 per •cent. the
risk from maleria. With the houses
upon pillars there is always free eircu-
lation of air beneath.
—Mueli interest has ree ntly been ex -
'I -cited in English engineer eg circles by
the announcement ef the G.scoVery of a
new motive power by Mr.. Edwin Sturge,
who has patented the means of applica-
tion. According to report, the new mo-
tive power threatens to displace steam
as the motive power for driving light
machinery and for all purposes of light
locomotion, either on land or water.
Arrangements are in progress to give
the invention a public test.
—Chloride of lime should be used
with care. A. young lady recently put
a large quautity in a clothea press where
there was. a musty smelt The bad odor
was -entirely destroyed by the chemical,
but a silk dress of a pate blue color was
bleached to a gray hue and rendered
almost useless.
—The following is said to be a good
substitute for matches where it would be
unsafe to use them. In a vial of clear
white glass, pat a piece of phosphorus
about the size of a uea. kill the vial
one third full of boiling olive oil, and
then cork it tightly. When e light is
required, remove the cork a moment
and then recork the vial. The empty.
space in the vial will become luminous.
The process eau be repeated as often as
desired.
"—A new development of telegraphy,
has been institntel by Michela, in Italy.'
He has conetructed a machine ; by
which sigus corresponding to various
sounds can be telegraphed. Thus we
have practically a telegraphic shorthand
to which the name 'steno telegraphy"
is given. Michele's apparatus has now
beea in regular use for some period in
telegraphing the debates of the Italian
Senate, and it is claimed that by this
method 10,000 words can be transmitted
per hour.
—A method of rcilitary nocturnal
signaling has been devised by a Russian,
&pt. Kostovich. To a small captive
balloon is s.usperaded an Edisou electric
lamp, which. by means of connecting 1
wires, can be kindled and extinguished '
at will lay au operator statueeed on board
ship or in auy other convenient position,
a series cf such extiuctions and reigni-
thins being employed according to a
telegra.plaic code.
—The mining fever at Port Arthur
has broken outafresti on account of a
rich find at Silver mountain, seventeen
miles beyond the Rabbit Mountain
-mines. It is said that euorrnous quan-
tities of ore are in sight. The Vein is
largo, from two to ten feet wide, end 1
has been traced over five miles. There:
are caves in it in which a man can
walk, walled in with silver. Large
speeimens of pure ore, weighing filtee'u
to twenty pounds, have been brought to
town. It is of very high wade.
—James Cu nuingbaria. employed on
the -Canadian Pacific: Railway, east, fell -
asleep at Hawk Lake the other aiglit.
with a lighted pipo in his pocket. On
being discovered he was burnt to a cri,p.
His clothee were a mites of smouldering
rags, and one side of hisbocly from tbe
bip to the head was blackened and
btleTted. One eye was completely de-
stroyed. As soon as he was moved he
woke to coneciouenees and pain, con -
sternly crying, for G-od's sake shoot We!
He was removed to Winuipeg Hospital,
where ne died.
Victoria's Eldest Daughter.
The Princess Royal ia a woman of
universal attainments. She writes po
litical memoirs keeps up correspon-
dence with philosephers, is a sculp-
tres, a painter, composes sonnets,
makes architectural plaus, etc. She
haus a great deal of natural intelligence,
but au education so extended that at
certain Moments it seems that the
superabundance of her ideas is detri-
mental to their arrangement. Her
strength lime sometimes , the result of
obsenzing the elearnees of the ideas
which she seizes and the opinions she
professes. She doea not rack her mind
for the oceasion ; its riches are so nu-
merous that she is constrained to with-
hold them, and speaks-, somewhat as
Roehefencisuld wtote, by maxims.
Society must be distasteful to her.
She does uot like it ; without doubt she
despises it, for one meets at her soirees
people not to be met with elsewhere,
and who mingle in society only at her
house. See does nothing to merit the
title of " WOMELD of the world, " but, on
the other hand, she bas the feeling—
one might say the pride—of her super-
iority of- priticess. She seems to dia.
dain the fidelity of social relations. A
mare nothing detaches or irritates her;
while, if it is a question of sustaining
an idea., she will display a resolute
persistency destined to triumph over all
obstacles.
She occupies herself with politics,
and she 14as upon this subject her pri-
vate opinions, which are notalways
those entertained in her imnaediate
surroundings. Thus, uuder the pretext
of satisfying her artistic tastes, she
often goes to Italy, so. as not to be
obliged to approve what she condemns or
to yield a point which she defends.
She is sineerely and boldly liberal, and
this is one of the grave reproaches ath
dressed to her. Her relations with the
Empress are very strained; they are less
so with the Emperor. She exerts over
her husbeed, by affection and by.skill,
an influence without limit.— Berlin

Curious Growth of a Tree.
Wheu the grave of Roger Williams,
the founder of Rhode Iedaud, was open-
ed, after the lapse of 180 years-el:lot an
atom of human remains vv as disceriaible.
Near the grave atood a venerable old
apple tree, when and by whom planted
is not known. This tree had sent two
ef its main roots into the graye of Mr.
'grid Mrs. Williams. The larger root
bad pushed its way through the earth
till it reached the precise spot occupied 1
by the skull of Roger Williams. There,
making a turn as if going round the
skull, it followed the directionlief the
backbone to the hips. Here it divided
into two branches, sending one along
each leg to the heel, where they both
turned upward to the toe. One of these
roots formed a slight orook at th4 Itne9,
which makes the whole liear a- 'very
clone resemblance to the hninanj form.
The graves were emptied of eve4 ,,par-
tiole of human duet; even the p aphate
of lime of the bones of both grav s was
all gone. The organic matter o Roger
Williams had passed into the woody
fibre and bloomed in the appleh1 SSOMS
and had become pleasant to th eye;:
and more, it had gone into th fruit!
from year to year, so that the questioii!
might be asked, who ate Roger Wil -
