The jewels were packed up, and the change handed to the pur- chaser, who requested one of the assist- ants to call a cab, and departed, order their°egerGions. Tam saw and felt this and it stung him keenly He hit upon a plan to change the tune from cruelty to kindness. He borrowed for a day a handle of bank notes and a bag of coins from a friend he knew in better days, who kindly humored his whim. Tarim, possessed of the treasure for but a few hours, set about turning over and over certain papers centained in his old chest, and was sorupulously carefal, to all appear- ance, to conceal his movements from the relations with Whom he lodged. The bank notes and the silver caught their attention, as Tam intended. The balk of the b-ued-le of notes and the big bag of coins had their desired effect. From that hour Tam had the most comfortable seat at their " ingle cheek," and the best fare the house could af- ford. Happy change •1 Tam now lives as he ought to have done. Years pass ed away, and Tam was called away from his earthly scene. His last breath had scarcely been drawn ere the L4 muckle kist " was opened, but, alas l what was. there? Numerous large stones, rolled up in bags to prevent their rolling about and betraying the secret of the " heavy kilt1" One after another was tossed out, and at the bot- tom lay the supposed treasure. It was in the shape of a mallet, and was care- fully concealed .by numerous paper wrappers. Curiosity waxed strong as the last wrapper was unbound.. There it lay, a mason's wooden mallet, with. this legibly inscribed thereon :T " I, Tam. Bell, Leave this melt To fell A' body wha gives their- a' to their bairns, Keepin' naething to themsel'." The consternation which this dis- covery caused may be better imagined than described. A Dance for Life. Mr. Williams was a savant of some reputation, and whilst out in the bush., following his soientifio pursuits in com- pany with Dr. Beattie, of Melbourne, went through a moat extraordinary ad- venture.. I had heard something of thin, and now whilst waiting for dinner, having got into conversation with Mr. Williams, I received fromhim the fol- lowing account of it. It appears they had gone far into ,the bush, and away fromthe settlements, upon a scientific and surveying expedition, quite alone. All went well with there until one even- ing, when they bad penetrated to a sin= gularly formed gully, where they decid- ed to pass the night. • Thoughtless of danger, they had just made arrangements for cooking their -supper„ when, from the top of the cliffs above and around them whiz came a shower of spears, and; at the same in- stant the load hideous yells which burst upon their startled ears told them that a tribe of aborigines were besetting them.. By a providential movement they had unwittingly saved their lives, for the black fellow never misses his aim; with his spear, in the use of which he is wenderfally expert ; but it aeenas that at the very monent when the deadly weapons were launched against them by the unaeen foe, they had both thrown thernselves flat on the ground, tired out with the day's toil, and to rest them- selves while waiting for the kettle to boil. A. lucky inspiration saved their lives. Mr. Williams, had once seen the intense delight with which a party of natives had, beheld a salutatory exercise of Some Europeans, and springing to his feet, he ittstri, ntly began to dance and 1 ns he ly; de he oe, it ild re to tc er- er, he Y b, he he t's e of he ns el - ed he ty S. of he ws es the mare to go," but " ready mon y." No one else has ever attempted to cure Catarrh in this • mi- ner, and no other treatment has ever cured Catarrh.
