Huron Assizes.
The Fail Assizes for the County of
Thum opened at Goderich On Monday,
September 22-nd, before Hon. Chief
;Ogee Wilson. Mr. Wm. Leant, Q.
of Barrie, coradiicted the crown busi-
ness and, the Barr was largely repre-
smite, Mr. Oder, of Toronto; being
the only " foreigner" present, which
speaks well for the ability and popular-
ity of the members of the profession in
this county. The following gentlemen
composed the Grand Jury;

The members of the Jury being duly
oworne in the Judge delivered the cue -
ternary address. He said that there
*ere several cases on the doeket, and it
was the 3.uty of the Grand Jury tol ex-
amine into the testimony brought be-
fore them, and then decide as togwbeth-
ee a true hill" or "no hill" should
be returned in each instance. There
was a charge of rape under aggravated
circumstances, by which the girl's mind
had been upset. The Judge here de-
fined the keriel construction of rape.
Atteeng the other eases were one for
felonious assault, one of nuisance by
obstructing a pi:bile highway (which
almost came under the head of a eivil
mai; s Case of forging hank bilis, and
a case of abstracting books from a _safe ;
case of murder or manslaughter

though the coroner's jury bereturned.

Tbe several cases were then taken up
and disposed of as follews
Adair vs. Wade. -Action for seduc-
tion. The parties concerned reside in
the township of Hay. The Plaintiff
had been seduced by Wade under prom-
iseof marriage in June, '1883, and he
failed to carry out the promise, hence
the aetionthe case being submitted
to the jury they were unable to agree as
to the amenut of damages, and repoit-
ing this to the Judge.His Lordship gave
a verdict for the plaintiff asteasing the
dart:tape for Plalotiff at $400 and, costs.
Vanatone ys. Vanstone.—Action for
money lent. Verdict by consent for
t1,250-.
The cases of Eays vs. Pollard and
Hays ve,.. Armstrong were the next
tried. Fall particulars of these, to-
gether -with the results were given last
week.
McLean vs. Tomas -hip of Hrtron.-
This was an aatiOli against the rannici
pality of the Township of Huron for
datnanee for injuries sustained by the
plaintiff and his wife by breaking
through a bridge which it was contend-

travel. A verdict -was given in favor pf
the plaintiff fur 5525 and in favor of

TI1E MAINE'S arlaRDER CASE
was the next brouelit up. The prisoners,
James Bearnish, Henry James Bearnish,
and Maanaseh Bearalsh, were placed in
- the- dock cb,arged with- the murder of
Wm. Maiaes On the 26th day of May
last and pleaded. not guilty. The par-
ticulars of this case were given at the
time and are known to oar readers. It
natty be mid, however, that the parties
concerned resided on the Clinton north-
ern gravel road near Blt th. The prison-
ers are a father and two sone. The
former is about 60 yeare of age and the
latter are aged about 18 and 20 respec-
tively. The Bearnish family are well-
to-do farmers. and have hitherto borne
a good character. The case is one of a Wm. Deacon. of Wingham,
very distressing diameter. The father bondsman for 5500.
is a tall, cleticatedooking man of respec- iten,
table appearance, wearing a long white
beard. His two sons are res,pectable
looking youn fa Mau. Their farm is
nearly opposite that of the deceased's,
on the Clinton road. The Unfortunate
occurrence was the result of a quarrel.
