—The oldest school teacher in the,
county of Essex, and one of the oldest
in the Province, has just retired.. from
teaching. The gentleman is Mr. W. 0.
Doherty, who has taught school since
1846, when he taught in Woodslee. He
has taught in all 33 years in Essex
county, and in. Detroit three years. He
last taught in Sandwich West. 'His
superannuation allowance will amount
to about $200.
—A heavy squall in the nature of a
cyclone, suddenly struck Quebec from
the northwest last Wednesday evening,
doing a large amount of damage barn
increditably sheet space of time. It
Spent. its force chiefly on the upper part
of the city, where it unroofed. a iaum-
ter of buildings, blew dawn old. Valls
and trees, fated the air with flying
debris, almost lifted people frona their
feet in the streets. It lasted in all but
five minutes. A few persons sustained
alight injuries, but no one was seriously
butt. The tornado was followed at a
later hour by a heavy thundeastorm
with hail, Which in tarn was succeeded
by alight frost.
—There have been a large number, of
American visitors at the Toronto Lacing -
trial Exhibition, and they have been not
alittle surprised at the vastness of the
display and its general excellence.
"Well, I'll be struck dumb," exclaimed
one Of these astonished gentlemen, after
inspecting several of the deparements,
"if ever I saw anything like this on the
ether side, and an for 25 cents !" In
reply to an inquiry he added—" You
can't get into any kind of a show over
there for less than fifty cents., and ten
to one you. will find more than half of
the exliibition made rip. of side. shows
and fakirs.' I have never seen an agri-
cultural show to equal this in the whole
'United States."
—Occasionally an instance occurs
where a man who leaves the land of the
free to avoid an acquaintance -with a
dungeon cell finds that his liberty is
imperilled even in Canada. This is the
cage with Louis A. Seafortb, the young
an who fled from W. S. Taylor's
*tatty store in. Utica, New York, ac-
companied by four gold watches, a sil-
ver watcla ancl three diamond rings.
Mr.. Seaforth was sanguine enough to
hope that under the shadow of the
Union Jack he was safe from the reach
of W. S. Taylor, his former employer.
But Mr. Ta Ion appealed to the lava,
and the law has a pretty long reach.
Seaforth was discovered in Toronto,
Etnd subsequently discovered himself in
a police station. He appeared at the
Police Court, and was charged with
bringing stolen goods into Canada. He
Pleaded guilty, and exptessed his will -
baste* to return sneh of the stolen pro -
Petty' as remained in his possession,
