If angleworms were permitted every boy would be out fishing, and the streams would be fished dry. As it is the patent artificial fly is so expensive that only the rich. are .able to fish. If tbe landlord hadn't kept my fishing a secret these three angleworms would have cost me a fine of £20 or 'abont thirty-three dollars and thirty-threes cents a worm. EPPS's COCOA.— GRATEFUL ` AND Com FORTING.—" By a thorough knowledgeof ala carry, vet these at length became the natural laws which govern the open athausted. They had supposed their apply would be sufficient, but nnfor- j n tely took the wrong, one of the neouatans surveyors's trails through themoautains. When they discovered that they had made a mistake, they - thought themselves too, far on the way totarn back, and they -thought that by Qontinuing their course they would be able to reach the Columbia River. ffter their provisions had given out they still travelled on for six days and & half. They were not provid- ed with firearms, and even it they had been, they would have had: little chance of bringing down game, SS animals are eery scarce,- bears being almost the -only ones frequently seen. Williamson, fer having been complaining for some —time that he felt tired, weak and hun- gry, at length one day at noon told his. companion that he was unable to walk any further,: and that he was going to die. He requested Owens to sit down and write a note for him to his people in New Jersey concerning his property, telling them that he had been on his way from tbe coast to the Colarnbia River, and that he had starved to death in the mountains ; also asking them to do the best they could with his property. After writing the note he told Owens to go on ahead and try to make his way out of the mountains and leave him (Williamson), as he knew- he was GOING TO- DIE 50021. Owens replied : "No, Jim, I will never leave you we started together, and I will die with you." After a few worda of conversation Williamson died. A correspondent of the Country Gen- tleman says : The most common • method of `Starting a new blackberry plantation is to use plants of the last year's growth, but it is well to - remind growers that they can do just about as well with suckers of the current year, if they will plant carefully and water at thetime of setting. Dig up plant in April or May, while in full growth, cut the top off near the ground, expose the roots as little as possible, plant very exon, pour water about the roots before filling the- hole with earth-; fill and pack the earth closely about it. I treated soveral hundred BO this spring, and they are doing rather better, I think than plants of last year set in April. Of these quite a good many always die for some reason, and is an excellent plan to fill these vacancies with suckers of the current year—much better than to wit a full year. The same is true of ell raspberries which propagate by suckers. If one waits a year, the young plants then must compete with their older neighbors, the roots of which already begin to monopolize the ground. The second year it is still worse, and indeed, itis well nigh impossible then to fill thevacancies successfully. For these reasons, when a plantation of anything is started—trees as well as vines or }slants—it is very important that all start at the same time. A Severe Cold. Settled in quick oousnmption. Fishing in England: That veracious chronicler, Eli 'Per- kins, says : I foued that over west of Warwick Castle one of the farmers who. rented several hundred acres along the Avon River, kept a little hotel. He permitted his guests to fish in the river, a brook shallow enough to be forded where it runs swiftly. I noticed that the fishermen always went out with a tremendous assortment of patent hooks and fancy flies. One man had -as many stir fifty specimens of hooks and flies. Like all the rest he came back without any fish. I never took ranch stock in• fanny flies, I have siways had better luck with plain grasshoppers or -angle- worms.
