Useful Receipts.
A Simple Disinfectant.— Dissolve
one-half drachm of nitrate of lead in a
pint or more of boiling water , dissolve
two drachms common salt in a jail of
water ; pour the two solutions together,
allow it to settle. A cloth dripped into
the clear fluid and hung up in at room
will sweeten the atmosphere insa-ntly.
The solution poured into foulsinks,
drains, &c..,: will sweeten them. I
Cucumber Pickles —To make encum-
ber pickles without salting, gather and
wash small cucumbers. Put them in
a six gallon jar, and cover each pickling
with sharp vinegar. Add a dozed, green
peppers. Cut a cloth to fit the jtr and
lay over the pickles ; on this the scum
will settle t remove and rinse out every
day. If the vinegar gets weak add a
half cup of suger, or more if thei jar is

We consider this a trifle mo e cruel
than vivisection -but it tea eh:s a ye
plain lesson.
Mixed. Pickles.—To every gallon of
vinegar put four ounces of curry powder,
four ounces of mustard powdet, three-
ounces
hreeounces bruised ginger, two drachms
cayeene pepper,two ounces of tumeric,
two ounces of garlic, half a E pound
skinned onions, and a quarter of a
ponpd of se:lt. Put all it a stone. jar.
Cover it with a bladder wet with pickle,
-and keep it warm by the fire for three
days, shaking it well three times a day.
Anything may be put into this prepar-
ation excepting red cabbage and. wal-
nuts. Gather everything fresh, such as
small cucumbers, green- grapes, green
tomatoes, cauliflowers, small ;onions,
nasturtiums, string beans; etc 1' Wipe
them, cut them when too large, and
throw them into the pickle.: Many
housekeepers will prefer to leave out
the garlic.
Corn a1 d Oats fi r Horses.
The following is the comparative
value from a. scientific standlkoint of
corn and oats as food for houses, and
farmers and horses may be benefitted
by a careful perusalof it and comparing
.it with their own • experience in the
matter. The former is deficient in
many of the elements of nutrition so
necessary for recuperating the constant
wear and tear which necessarily takes
place in the body of a living animal. On
this account horses which are e4olusive-
lyfed on corn and hay do no receive
that kind of nourishment whit seems
necessary for the due stip ort and
fabric ;

hence we must not be surprised. that
corn -fed horses show every evidence of
being laugui3, by sweating profusely
when being worked, lack of vitality,
- etc. Outs, on theother hand, contain
more of the essential elements of
nutrition than any other article of food
which can be fed with impunity to
horses, Oats aro.-not only tae most
natural food for horses, but are decided-
ly the most nutritious. They are the
cheapest because there is no risk in
feeding them, and experience has
taught that horses properly fed on • oats
and timothy hay can, with. regular
exercise, good grooming and proper
sanitary regulations, be brought to the
highest state` of physical culture, and
can perform more work with less evi-
dence of fatigue than when fed on any
other article of food.
Sunlight in Stables.
This is a timely topic, because this
is the season when repairs of buildings
are planned and carried out. No stable
for farm animals eliould be without a
window. Every f.trmer sees his deg
and cat select a belt of sunshine to batik
in, and sees the: cattle seek the sunny
side of the barnyard in the winter. We
know the influence of direct sunshine
upon plants, and here is an experiment
to show what darkness will do for ani
mals. Says a writer in the National
Live Stock Journal : ' We had two
deep -red calves of the same age (sixty
days), one weighing 180 pounds and the
other 182 pounds. The latter we placed in
a dark room, with a trough that could be
nlled by a spout through a partition.
The other was confined in the same
amount of space,. but in full light, and
both\ were fed exactly alike for the next
