Monaco and its Gamblers.
The Casino --of Monte Carlo is now
the moat important part • of the princi-
pality of Monaco ; instead of being sub-
ordinate to the palace, the latter has
become but an appendage to the modern
splendor across the bay. Monte Carlo
occupies a site as beautiful as any in
the world. In front the blue sea leaves
its lovely garden ; on the east the soft
coast line of Italy stretches away in the
distance ; on the west bank is the bold,
carving rook of Monaco, with its castle
and port, and the great cliff of the Dog's
Head. Behind rises the near moun-
tain high above ; and on its top out-
lined against the sky, stands the old
tower of Turbia in its lonely, rained
majesty looking towards Rome.
From a spacious, richly decorated -en-
trance hail, the gambling rooms open
by noiseless swing doors. Entering, we
saw the tables surrounded by a close
circle of seated players, with a second
circle standing behind, playing over
their phoulders, and sometimes even a
third behind these. Although so many
pa/sorts were present, it was very still,.
the only sounds being the chink, chink
of the gold and silver coin, and the dull
mechanical voices of the officials an=
nouncing the winning numbers- There
were tables for both roulette and trente
et quarante, the playing beginning each
day at eleven in the morning and con- The 'terat

with a shudder, looking up at the 'Calm

" It is a species of madness," said
Verney. Miss Elaine was with him ;.
she had taken hisarmwhile in the
gambling room;she said she felt so
timid. Margaret and Lloyd meanwhile
hast. only looked on for a moment or
two, and had, then disappeared ,• we
learned afterward that they had gone
to the concert room, where music beauti-
ful enough for paradise was filling the
perfumed air. .
"For those who care nothing for
gambling that music is one of the baits,"
said; Lloyd.: " When you. really love
muso,it is very hard to keep away from
it ; and here, where there is no other
music to complete with- it, it ie offered

Hundreds of persons come here sin-

few go away without one look at the,

The Haunted Castle.
Let the story of the Rev.. Thomas
Muohworth be told in his own words:-
Marty years ago,in company with two
other English clergymen, I paid a.. visit
to Satherlandshire, of the scenery of
which we had heard so much_ The
beauty of the part in which we lived
much surpassed our expectations, and
we spent whole days in simply wander-
ing up and dawn the hills. On one oc
casion we made monger than usual ex-
cursion into the interior, and thought of
returning only when it was growing
dark. We did not then understand the
signs of theweather, and were wholly
unprepared for a wild thunderstorms
which came on very suddenly.: It soon
grew dark and darker but we strag-
gled bravely on, sometimes falling into
bogs, and at other times running against
pests set up to dry. After two hours of
miserable weary wandering, we happily
espied a light, towards which we gladly
bent our steps. When we came ;up we
found that the light proceeded from a
very small hut of one room. We knock-
ed at the door, and in the- name of
charity demanded admission. An old
woman answered us from within-
" Who are you ? *hat do you want ?"
and without waiting for an answer,
went on--" `You can't- get in here ; none
lives here but myself and I have little
enough room ; you had better go away."
When she stopped we said that we were
benighted, that the night was stormy,
and that she was not cruel enough to
keep us out. " Oh,. yes, I must keep -you
out," she replied " but let me tell you
that, only half -a -mile away, you will
find a beautiful castle, with tables
spread and comfortable rooms awaiting
you. Bat, .remember the place is
haunted, Will you go" We. said we
would... She opened the door and point-
ed the way. We soon reached the cas-
tle, which we saw to be beautiful with
oat, and on;entering found it beautiful
within. We'went to a spacious bedroom
and put on dry clothes, which seemed
to be put there on purpose for us, for as
yet we saw nobody in or about the
place.. We then went down to the din-
ing room, and there found the table
laid with many tempting viands, of
which we partook. We also freely help-
ed ourselves to the wine which was of
excellent quality. About eleven o'clock
we proposed going to bed, as we were
very tired. As we had hitherto..found
everything as the old woman said we
thought there might be something of
truth in her statements, and cast lots as
to who should watch while the other
two slept. The lot fell on me, and
the two of them were soon, asleep.
I sat -nervously I must confess -in,
the easy chair by the fire. Just as the
clock in. the tower struck twelve, I
