At last .aft bright idea occurred to oe member of the family, and action soo.i lofowed thought. The boys were enlisted in the en et - end, ander the orders and o ,' of their commander, they drew the larger stones to the centre of the lawn, and packed them into a circle of about six feet in diameter, putting ip smellier stones and earth to fill up the interstices ; and then adding another larger, and filling up in like manner . and so on until all the stones were dis- off, and quite; a pyramid had been 'ra<usetl. Some of the largest and rough - .est atom were kept for the outside; to ;give it_a rocky effect. Plenty of goo „earth Was thrown in between'the stone , and then began the work which was t .crown with beauty- what otherwis would be a questionable ornament >iihe smooth, green. -lawn. Several vines were planted, with here and there seeds and roots of various hinds. These have grown to the top - o the pyramid. and now that rocke =tstalds the glory of the lawn. Its base is encircled with soarle geraniums. A canary vine, with yellow, bird -like flowers, climbs up on one side to meet and intertwine with morning- .glory and nasturtiums. The bright crimson and yellow flowers of the nas turtiuins contrast finely -with the many .coiored trumpets of the morning glories while between these vines - are Mue lobelia blossoms, clusters of oandytnft ransies, verbenas, and mignonette. Such a thing of beauty and fragrance as it is 1 And, now, instead of planning as heretofore how to get rid of the atones, the children are working to col- lect more ; rolling them in from high' ways and byways, so as to have another rockery on the opposite side of the lawn, where they have already planted a -wisteria and a Virginia creeper, whose leaves will be. brilliant in color when autumn frosts chill all the beauty from the flowers. A Supposed Mute Speaks on His I Death -Bed. A London despatch says : The famous deaf and kuick• knack peddler, who during the past few years attracted so. lunch attention on London Bridge, has died in the Southwark Workhouse. Before his death he beckoned to his cot -one of the hospital.attendanta and terri- fled flim by speaking to him. . When the attendant recovered from his aston4 ishment the beggar confessed that hia deafness and dumbness had been feigned. He said he was a Swiss gen- tleman of fortune and belonged to one •of the best families in the. Republic. When a young man he wee betrothed to a beautiful and accomplished girl. He wt#s possessed of a most violent temper, and in a lovers' quarrel over a trifle one day_ -he so wounded the girl by the bit- -t*ness of his invectives that she fell ill. His cruel conduct stung him eo that_ he became melancholy from remorse', and left home. He then resolved to punish himself ; he vowed to become a volnn- tory exile for twenty years, to earn his own living. leave his fottnne untouched, keep his relatives and friends ignorant -of his whereabouts, go bareheaded and baaefoottd in all weather during the entire time, and to listen to no one and -speak to no human being during the last ten years of his exile. If he lived to complete his vow he meant- to return home and use his fortune and the re- .mainder of his days in making his betrothed' happy providing she were alive and unmarried. He had rigidly kept -his vow, " but," he cried befi'e he -expired,"my time is not quite up and 1 must die before it is. I have been punished as I deserve." Iuvestigation so far as it has gone has proven that the peddler's story is entirely truo, and his family in Switzerland have been made acquainted with Ins death. • Gunning Pat. An Irishman took a contract to dig a public well. When he had dug about '25 feet down, he came one morning and found it had fallen in -filled nearly to the top. Pat looked cautiously round and saw that no person _was near, then took off bis hat and coat, hung them on a windlass, crawled in •some bushes, and waited events. In a short time the neighbors discovered the well had fallen in, and seeing Pat's hat and coat on the windlass, they supposed that he was at the bottom of the excavation. Only a few hours of brisk digging cleared the loose earth from the well. Just as the excavators had reached the bottom, and were wondering where the body was, Pat came walking out of the bushes, and good natnredly thanked the workers for relieving him of a sorry job. News Notes. -Sir Edward Landseer's well-known picture, " The Monarch of the Glen," was: sold the other day far 6,300 guineas to Mr. Henry W. Eaton, M. P. for Coventry. -The Central Bridge Works, of Buf- falo, have successfully accomplished one ef the most difficult engineering feats ever attempted in America. When the upper suspension bridge at the Falls was constructed, it - was placed upon wooden towers. For some time past the company has felt the necessity of re. placing these with others made of more durable material, but how to do this 3vas the question. The engineers of the Central Bridge Works were - consulted, and they agreed to undertake the work. New iron towers were constructed, and on Wednesday morning of last week the work of transferring the weight of the bridge from the 'old towers to the new was successfully completed. - Au idea of what this involved may be formed from the fact that the bridge is a. 1,280 foot spau, -and the "dead weiglit to be transferred was 528 tons, or 264 - tens at each end. This was done an a small bed plate or saddle only 4x4 feet. This was possibly a more difficult job than anything 'connected with the great Cantilever bridge.
