Mr. Mitchell, formerly pastor ef the Presbyterian Church in Mitchell, has received a-nnanimous call from the First Presbyterian church in Port Hope. —The Soiree held in the church on the 12th concession, of Howiok, at Scarfe's corners, though not large was a very god one. ReSr. Mr. Watt took the chair and Called on Mr. Wall, who gave a good addressRev. Mr. Young, of Clifford, was then, called on and made a lengthy and interesting address on temperence. Good music was fur- nished by the Tnrnberry ohoir and an excellent tea was served by the ladies of that neighborhood. The amount real- ized was $25. —A few day's since Mr. T. Welsh, of Goderich township, 101 information against Mr. John Woon; on a charge of obstructing the roadway. Both had loads, and were going in opposite direo- tiona on the Bayfield road. The 09.80 was tried before Messra.Coxand Hincks, at Porter's Hill, who evidently consider- ed. Mr. Woon in the wrong, as he was fined Si and Coats. Mr. Woon then laid information against Mr. Welsh, on a similar charge, and the case was tried before. Mayor Forrester, of Clinton, who adjudged Welsh in the wrong, fining him $1 and cost. He- gave notice of appal, but the affair was afterwards amicably settled. —The Pilot Mound Signal of a recent date says : A short time ago Mr. Ed. Rollins, of 2.12, sent a carload of frozen wheat to Seaforth, !Ontario. The ven- ture proved successful, and he received an order to purchase eleven carloads of wheat and forward it to Ontario -a portion going to Port Arthur to be stored in the elevators there until the opening of navigation, and the balance to Point Edward. Mr. Rollins was at the Mound, on Wednesday of last week, and he succeeded in purchasing about 800 bushels of frozen grain from Mr. Bellamy, agent for A. Harris, Son & Co., for which he agred to pay forty cents per bushel delivered at Monitore -After a great many preliminaries the Methodist and. Bible Christian churches of Hawesville have decided -to unite their forces, and will most likely worship in the building known as the Methodist church, providing the memhers of both churohes ratify this actiou et the United boards. The Bible Christian edifice will be sold, and it is intended to construct a gallery over, the front of the Methodist church for the acoommodatton of the united member- ship; a driving shed will also be erected on the east side of the church. Says the Clinton -New Era: A couple of young men from this neighborhood have got into serious trouble in the Northwest, by their desire to get rich without earning their riches. It seems that merchants at Brandon, or some place in that neighborhood, have suffer ed largely by thefts, and the police, in tracing up these crimes, discovered the existenoe of a gang of seven young men, formed for the purpose of robbery, who were arrested, and in whose shanty was found stolen goods to the value of $700. -4d Oue of them was a youth named. Smith, a former resident of Clinton, and an- other- was named Sundercock, formerly of Hullett. At the trial they ee ere given thirteen months inaprisonment. The friends ef these foolish young men are very honorable and respectable people, and naturally feel their position very keenly. Haliett torrespond-ent of the Clinton New Era says: Thedeath of Mr. P. Patterson, of the 13th comes. sion, has left a blank, which will 'be hard to fill. Deceased was a native of Renfrewshire, Scotland., He left his native pariah and went toiGlasgow, from which he emigrated to this country about 46 years ago. He worked at his trade, coopering, in the township of Beverly, and the town of Galt, for a number of years after he arrived in this country. Mr. Patterson removed to the lot on which he lately resided about 35 years ago, undergoing the hardships incidental to a pioneer life in the back- woods. There are few in his position oflife informed as he was on the general topics of the day. The Presbyterian church has in him lost an ardent sup- porter. His widow, two ions and one daughter survive to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and father. Troyer, T. Diok, D. Mack, J. Carrick, W. Caldwell, H. Bell, W. McSherry, - C. Reichert, C. A fe orders were issued by imthe teve hen the council adjourned to e 16n T urs - day, April 24th. ' ' ] -; —The Brussels Post :of last week make mention of the ,following cruel joke which was practised on a couple of young women of that place: latet week some persons in. Brussels wrote a letter to a daughter of John Shand of that place- who resides in Toronto; telling her that her mother was dan- gerously ill and if she wanted to see her alive she must come home at once. 2088 Shand quickly commen icated with two of her sisters, also in the oity, and the three started for Brussels, not knowing whether their mother was dead or alive. On reaching home what was their surprise to find her in the enjoyment of good health, although greatly unnerved when she saw her children so unexpectedly . and heard the OailSeof their visit. A joke is all right eneugi but to put the three ladies to the expense of coming all the way from Toronto and cause them the worry and sorrow on. hearing such news is carrying the joke too far and will no doubt be despisea by all. It is known, almost to a certainty, who wrote the letter. Hay. I CoUNIcin MEErieTG.—The council met ion Friday, Mara. 14tli. The members • pai. present. The Reeve took the ehair at one o'clock.p.rn.
