Cattle Fishing for Food.
,The bottom of the St. John's River i
Florida is a vast pasture 'ground, o
Which large herds of cattle are kept, i
that region, for forage during the winte
season, These cattle feed, daily an
etentintially allelay on the grass the
grows on the bottom. 'They have to Pu
their heads under the water to get i
and present a curious appearance whil
thus engaged, when, for a minute o
tciore, they plunge in their heads an
horns and leave -nothing but their bac
exposed. They seem to be fishing, an
especially when the head comes .0
dripping with water and the mouth flu
Ed with what seems to be shreddish fish
The grass is a species of celery and ver
juicy, and though somewhat bitter, ye
ft does not make the flesh or milk un
palatable. Cattle, when first introduo
ed to these fields, present an amusin
epectacle, learning how 'to get at -th
grass. The knowledge is acquired onl
by a reasoning process, and can be in n
way instinotive.
A Persistent Temperance Ad-
• vocate.
It was a hot summer's day, and the
streets of Smokely were stifling. All
who could be indoors were keeping out
-of the rays of. the sun, and being the
dinner -hour, traffic was in a great meas-
ure suspended. In Factory Street the
quietude was especially marked. Not
a vehicle. was in sight, and of human
beings only a man and boy could be

Halfway dawn Factory Street there
Is a bridge spanning the river, a muddy
and sluggish stream of water, as thick
as porter, and almost as bad to drink.
The man paused upon the bridge, and
leaning his arms upon the parapet,lobk-
ed down upon it with heavy eyes.
The river was just then of no interest
to him, and he could not have told why
be should halt there to look at it. In-
deed, he was not thinking of it or of
anything else particularly. He *as
dimply feebly ruminating, in a dreamy
chaotic fashion, upon the fact that he
bad idled away the morning in the
publio-house, and was going home td a
house where there was no dinner wait-
ing for him.
A tug at his coat.tails turned hie
thoughts back to things immediately
doncerning him; Looking down, he saw
the little lame by, who had a pen and
a little book of pledges in his hand.
"Please sign," said the child.
" Sign what?" thickly asked the man.
" The pledge," was the answer ; "you
'lave been drinking, and ought to sign.
y father used to drink, and he signed,
and it's been so good for him and all et
florae. Do sign, please."
"Give me We pen," said the man,
Wining his beak against the bridge.
The boy gladly gave him the pen, but
was dismayed to _ see that instead of
Using it properiy,he bent it on the bridge
•
and broke it.
" That's my view of the matter• ," he
" Never mind," said the little fellow,
"I've got another. Please, sign."
The man took the second pen, and
broke that too, and tossed the pieces
(contemptuously into the river.
" Now, go away," he said, "and don't
bother me any more."
The little fellow looked puzzled, atid it
deemed as if he were beaten. Quickly
Wheeling around, he limped off home-
ward, and the man, with a coarse laugh,
put his elbows upon the bridge again,
and considered the matter was done
with, and that he would be left at
peace.
He sign, the pledge ?' Not he. Wasn't
he a man, and didn't he know that a
drop of beer was good for him ? Any-
how, he liked beer, and he meant to
drink as much as he could get, and en-
joy himself like a man.
But the little lame boy was not de-
feated ; he was only checked for a mo-
ment. Ere long he came limping back
with another pen in his hand, and hav-
ing once more called the attention of
the drunken man to his presence, held
ft up with a wistful look upon his
face.
"Do sign," he urged ; " it is such ia
good thing -to be Bober, as father is ROW.
Only try what it is, and you will never
drink again. And you see Ihave another
pen, sir."
"Give me that pen," said the man
aridity, and when he got hold of it, he
Smashed that also, pressing it down
on the parapet of the bridge with vicious
force.
Now, have done with it," he said,
"and let me alone,"
"Please I have another," said 'the
boy ;- and that in it's turn was broken.
"Here's another still," said the boy,'
with good-tempered perseverance, " Do,
do sign."
That was broken, and another, and
another • but the boy would not give in.
He had known what if was to have e.'
father given to drink, and had tasted
the joys of temperance, and he was per-
distent.
h If you please," he said, "I've brought
s whole box of pens. Do sign," and he
produced that box of pens from his
pocket, and held it up before the amaz-
ed and partially sobered man.
" Well," he said,Fafter a long pause',
"I like your courage and your good
temper, I suppose you mean to beat
me." •
"Do sign," was the answer ; "you will
be so glad by-and-by."
" So I witl," said the man, with sad-
den determination ; "there roust be
something in it for a little ohaplike you
to take it up so strongly. Give me the
pen."
• He broke no more, but he put his
name to the pledge ; and he and the
little lame boy, after a hearty shake of
the hand, went their several ways, the
boy to rejoice over his success, and the
man to live a new and respectable life,
surrounded with the joys that attend
upon true religion and temperance. _
Now it is said of that little lame boy,
and truly said, that his labors have been
blessed, and that he has induced more
than a hundrel people to give up drink.
He was not daunted, as you see. One
refusal, or two, or ten, was not enough
for him. He asked again and yet again
for the pen to be used to sign the pledge,
and when people saw how earnest he
was, they saw that there was something
in it, as the man on the bridge did, and
put their names down. Their is some-
thing in it, more than you young people
now or can ever guess, although many
