and without a smile or the loss of a
single -stroke, t;hat.the deacon was paz-

noon hell now rang,
went in to dinner. A. soon as grave had
been said, all hands were invited to
help themselves. '' We are farmers,"
said the deacon, " and have no time for
compliments."
The stranger now • made; an ` entire
change in the programme. He handled
the knife and fork in a lively manner,
and kept it up ; and when all bad fin-
ished :and left the table, he had just got
fairly under way. The deacon and his
wife repawud to the sitting room where
a ooneultation was held. It was evi-
deat that they had got a tramp, (or
shack" as they were then called), on
their hands and the wife said, " pack
hira off. at once." I should," said her
husband, e only that I think he, ` is no
dissipated fellow, he understands'mow-

any rate." He then went back to the
kitchen, and the man was still busy.
" It seems to me," said the deacon,
"that your philosophy is rather shaky.
It is a poor rule that won't work both
ways. Your 'moderation' seems to have
deserted you.

The stranger merely raised his eyes
from his plate long enough to say;
"Whatsoever thy bands find to do, do
it with thy might,"
The deacon bad determined not to

The afternoon was warm, and the
e
deacon perspired profusely. The men,
however, seemedppndisturbed and took
au drink, while his employer emptied a
two quart jug of sweetened water and
sent the boy for more.
He tried to talk with the stranger.
but he was not sociably inclined, and
the only; remark be had thus far made
was, 'It's strange what a' good fall meal
will do for a man,"
The piece was 80o down, and the
man led: off for another square. " We
won't go quite so large this time," said
the deacon ; "this is a heavy ; burden
and as it is the first of my mowing this
season, _perhapie we had better take it a
little easier."
At supper the new man ate heartily,
but nothing compared with his dinner.
Before the next day was through, the
deacon found that he had a man for
whom he was no match hi the hay -field,
although he was some ten years his
tauier, and bad always prided himself
on never being beaten.
By the'third day the man had,=as he
expressed it, '•got filed up" and began
to talk a little. "The fact was," said
he, "I had been on the road three days
with no money, and beg I would not,
and I was well nigh starved."
After the hay season, which .the dea-
con declared he had gone through with
snare easily than for many years, he
paid the man five dollars more than the
stipulated price, and then said, "now I
want to engage you for everyhay season
for five years."
"Ah 1" said the man, "we know not
where we may be in that time. Provi-
dence permitting, I should be most
happy to grant your request, but take
ran thought for the morrow. Thou
knowest not what a day may bring
forth. -
