us talk of .something else."
—A Iaz fellow once declared in pub-
be otnpany that he couldn't find bread
for b1a family. " Nor I," replied an in-
dustrious mechanic, " I am obliged to
work for it."
---A, lady and her little daughter
pang Qat of church, the ohild bade
good-bye to a poorly dressed little girl.
-=How did yon know her ?" inquired the
mother. _' Why, you see, mamma, she
came into our Sabbath school alone,
and I made a place for her on my seat,
and I smiled and she smiled, and then
we were acquainted."
=tI think a bath daily would be
beneficial in your case," said a physician
to a patient. "Well, I don't know, don.
tor," he feebly replied. " I took a bath
cave, se year or two ago ; I felt better
for a while, but it wasn't long before I
was: just as bad as ever, and Lhave
been growing worse ever since." This
is almost equal to the French medical
writer, whoobjected to bathing, because
it removed the natural secretions of the
skin.
—An American girl, at a school ex-
amination, being asked to name . the
books of the Old Testament replied :
"Devonshire,. Exeter; Liticus, Nurn-
berg, Astronomy, Jupiter, Jumbo and
Rath.
—" Wife," said a New Haven man
impatiently, " why do yon let that child
ran around to -day so dirty,so much like
&little monkey ? . I saw him in neigh-
bor Tones' yard just now, the worst
looking object I ever saw." Was he
over there, though ? was the responded
inquiry. " Well, he'll pass for Mr.
Jones' dirty brat so long as he is there ;
I'm not going to worry."
=The shower came up, or rather it
came down—a shower never comes up
—so unexpectedly that nearly every-
body was taken by surprise and Jeffer-
son Avenue was in a panic. _Young
'Masher, who never goes without his
umbrella, saw his opportunity, and sail-
ing up to the prettiest girl with the
prettiest hat in all Burlington, made a
bow that is warranted to kill across the
street. and said : " May I offer you my
bmbrsila ?" " Oh, a thousand thanks,"
she said. "Papa will bring it down to the
office- in the morning," and sailed away
dry shod, leaving him desolate and soak-
ing in his loneliness, like a pelican in
the wilderness and a weather -vane
upon the house -top.
Close Up, Boys.
Among the troops in Western Vir-
ginia, stories about the Phillippi affair
formed a staple of conversation. Here
is one of the best :
A certain Indiana company, almost
worn out with marching, was straggling
along with very little regard to order.
Hurrying up to his men, the captain
shouted :
"Close up boys! close up 1 If the
enemy were to fire on. you when you're
straggling along thet way they couldn't
hit one of you! Close up!" ,
And the boys closed up immediately.
What Sleeper Means. -
sleeper is one who sleeps. A
sleeper is that in which the sleeper
sleeps. A sleeper is that on which the
steeper whioh carries the sleeper while
he sleepa runs. Therefore while the
sleeper sleeps in the sleeper the sleeper
earnest the sleeper over the sleeper
under the sleeper until the sleeper whish
carries the sleeper jumps off the sleeper
and wakes the sleeper in the sleeper by
striking the sleeper under the sleeper
and there is no sleeper in the sleeper on
the sleeper.

An Angel Unalloyed.
The beat natured woman in the
United States lives in Austin. She has
been married a -number of years to a man
named Ferguson, bat she and her hus-
band have not had a quarrel yet, and he
'has frequently boasted that it was nt-
Iterly impossible to make her angry.
-Ferguson made several desperate at-
tempts to see if 'he could not exasperate.
her to look cross or scowl at him, merely
to gratify his curiosity, but the more
outrageous he acted the more affable
and loving she behaved.
Last week, lie was talking with a
friend about what a hard time he had
trying to find oat if his wife had a tem -
par. This friend offered to bet $50 that
if Ferguson were to go home drank,
raise a row, and: pull the tablecloth fall
of dishes off the table, she would show
some aign cf annoyance. Ferguson said
he didn't want to rob a friend of his
money, for he knew he would win but
they at last made a bet of $50, the
friend to hide !in the front yard and.
watch the proceld ngs of the convention
through the window.
Ferguson calve home late, and appa-
rently fighting drunk. She met him at
the gate, kissed him, and assisted his
tottering steps to the house- He sat

became) of age he inherited from hi fa,-
bherimmense estate. He soon be-
came to Miss Eliza Jane B ard-

New York City. But before the ar-
rage nook plans he suffered, a stro e of
paralysis, which was destined to co fine
him a quiet life for thirty years. His
engament, of course, was broken but
his losing sweetheart remained single
for hie sake, and the two were associated
as brther and sister. In all of i Mr.
Roose, elt's sohemee of benevolence Millis
Boardman was ass untiring assistant. For
him she eschewed sooiety, and devoted
her these and talents to good Works., In
his will he bequeathed her a life an-
nuity of 55,000 (she already had mems),
and the personal property inherited
from his father, which he had increased
by care, he willed to the hospital which
bears his nanae, making Miss Boardtnan
sole executrix. •The use of his real estate
he left to his nephew, James Roosevelt
Brown, a son of one of the Brown Bro.
therse bankers, who had married Mr..
Roosevelt's sister. By the provisions of
the will, this real estate was also to pass,
to the hospital in the event of Mr.
Brown dying childless. It transpired'
that his death occurred exactly five
week after his uncle's death, so that
the hospital : was doubly benefited. ,It
is a greet and good hospital.
