THE HURON EXPOSITOR.
News Items.
On -Saturday 13th inst., at oneo'clock
an American entered one of the banks
in London and presented . a,chegue for
6100. In the corner the figures read
$1,000 00, and in the hurity of the busy
time the latter amount was paid. The
teller afterwards discovered the mistake
and searched the city for the swindler
without success.
-r-Scotland can ill afford to lose any
more trees at present, says the London
Truth, for several places have been well
nigh devasted by last winter's gales. At
Tyuingham and Dunse • Castle the de-
struction has been prodigious, and at
Luse, Sir James. Colquhonn's place on
the shores of Loch Lomond, some 6,000
treeslell. Nearly 2,000 trees have been
blown down in Queen Victoria's forest
of Ballochbuie. The havoc produced
in Mar Forest is almost incredible, es.
pecially on the north side of the Dee,
where the oldest trees were, and there
has been a heavy fall in Ivercanld
Forest.
—Mr John Bright appeared at the
Duke of Albany's wedding in a court
dress of black velvet, which looked
strangely simple among the glittering
uniforms about him. The persons most
admired on this occasion was the beauti-
ful Princess of Wales, whose costume of
pale, bine brocade had a train embroid-
ered with flowers. Mand, Victoria and
Louise, her three young daughters,
walked into the chapel with her. Each
was dressed in satin of the same pale
blue, and their long., fair hair flowed
away from their sparkling,, intelligent
faces.
—The services in the Catholic
Church, Wingham, on Sunday last,
were more than usually, interesting.
The pastor, Rev. Father OConnor, was
assisted by Rev. Father Lamont, from
Irishtown, who preached at high mass.
The latter gentleman is one of the best
Gaelic scholars of the day. He visits
Wingham at stated periods for the
purpose of attending to the spiritual
wants of Catholics in that vicinity who
speak Gaelic. The choir from St. An-
gustipe Church, Wawanosh, under the
leadership of Miss Le Marche, were in
attendance and led the music.
—In accordance with a resolution
passed by the Exeter Couaoil a short
time since, causing the separation of
the liquor business from ' other busi-
ness in that town, Mr. John Farmer
and S. C. Hersey, have' removed their
liquor and placed it in a separate apart-
ment. The building recently occupied
P
by Mr. W. B. Salley as a drag stare, is
is now used as Mr. Farmer's liquor
store. Mr. Hersey has Amit a partition
through his store, and the back portion
is used for the liquor business. A door
has been placed in the south side of the
building, through which the public may
have access to the liquor department.
—James Vick, the well k own florist
and seedsman, is dead, aged 63 years.
James Vick was born in. Portsmouth,
England ; was a playmate of Dickens :
came to this country in 1833, and set
type with Greely on the Knickerbocker;
was a long time secretary of the Ameri
can Pomological Society, a' member of
the- Royal Horticultural Society of Eng-
land, and went into the shed business
in 1860 He was one of the most chari-
table of men. It is reported his gifts
averaged over 610,000 a yeer. During
the Kansas grasshopper plague, nine
years ago he sent $25,000 worth of seeds
to the sufferers, and last year sent
$10,000 or $15,000 worth to the Michi-
gan sufferers.

About Housed.
Whenever the ills eve k ow become
so bitter that to escape tem we are
willing to rush on those we , now not of,
then the landlord will neither paint nor
paper, and adds insult to injury by
raising the rent, when the gas escapes
and one is not rich enough to call in -a
plumber, then the long suffering tenant
goes house -hunting. It is Rafe to say
that two-thirdsof those who drive land-
lords and tenants in possession out of
their seven senses during the month
precedingithe annual Hegira are woman.
Women are supposed to exercise a watch-
ful care over the minutire,' to have a
thoughtful regard to the saving of steps,
the probabilities of refitting carpets and
the possibilities of furniture, which the
more comprehensive intellect of a man
disdains. To find a house provided with
all the advantages existing and desired
in theone relinquished, with enough
additional ones to connterhalance the
expense of moving, at the same- rent in
a desirable location, with all other et
ceteras, is no " fool of a job.i'
It affords one a delightful opportunity
of studying human nature, while engag-
ed in the business of selectir}g a domi-
cile. I recently enjoyed the privilege
of meeting some of my oonlptry-women
under circumstances trying to both
parties. On information gained from
the advertising columns of our town.
paper, I rang the bell at a respectable
looking house, and waited With consi-
derable patience for a hungry woman
for five minutes bef'sre it waa answered
by a brilliantly complexioned woman,
with sleeves rolled above her elbows, a
piece of coffee sacking girded about her
for an apron. and hair plainly last
"groomed'"- the week previous. "Can
I see the lady of the house ?' ' That's
me." Too astonished to have the pre-
sence of mind to ask if John Smith
lived there, 'I murmured something
about "rooms" :.t rent" and "paper," to
which; in response : "My goodness gra-
cious sakes:' No ! Them rooms was
rented yisterday." As the door shut,
we softly said, "She never banged the
door." At the next place, when the
purpose of the call was set forth, a com-
prehensive glance from .the might -be.
landlady took me in from head to foot.
I was instantly and painfully conscious
of the missing button on my left boot
and a ripped glove. "What's yer occy-
potion ?" Feeling instinctively for the
reportorial notebook, I blushingly avow-
ed a connection with the ewspaper
business. "Well, I suspect :y rooms'll
be too high priced for ye." hey prov-
ed to be. Sixty dollars a onth for
three medium sized furnised rooms,
on the second floor, with nei her board
nor fuel included, we felt as indeed
rather "high priced." So I said the
price was actually quite real nable, but
that the rooms were really n t furnish-
ed with that degree of eiegan a to which
we had been accustomed, ane that they
were smaller than those in which we
were at present, but that if we could
not find what suitedus m re nearly,
we would see her later" and left,
thankful to escape a bill for out while
discussing the possibility of occupying
these valuable apartments.
A tour among the houses to relnt in cities
andtowns,- discloses the fact that there
are many of them whioh, desirable in
any respects, are yet most inconveni-
ently arranged. It - would seem that
my builders cling to the old fashion-
er enough to admit a bed -stead and
wasistand, and that closets are a wo-
naan's notion, calculated to use up space
whioh might better be put into parlors.
It is a rule rather than the exception,
in medium two story houses, to find a
floo which would make two commodi-
ous rooms with nice closets, cut up into
three -or four rooms, hardly big enough
to "swing a cat round," if one had ocos,-

niznal, and with little recesses, which
an be yclept closets only by courtesy.

Are derived from the blood, which is

and the motor of the bodily organs.
When the circulation becomes impover-

evils is Northrop & Lyman's Vegetable

While waiting for a car we called at
the Smith Medicine Co.'s office, 663
Craig street, and find, it a place well
worth a visit. While there a Mr. John
Reynolds, living at 102 Canal Street,
'came in with a monster tape worm
some 45 feet in length, which he had
expelled the day before, after taking Dr.
Smith's Great German. Remedy—and
he spoke of it in terms of the highest
praise, having tried numberless other
remedies and doctors without success.
We were also shown eleven large
stomach worms, removed from a little
child of Patrick Smith's living at 96
Chenueville street, with one dose of the
Remedy. They have thousands of
testimonials, and before our car came
along we were fully convinced of the
