MR. EDITOB,—DELR SIR : Your la
issue contains a letter signed "Colle
ate Inatituke," which seems to call f
a few bri0 corrections and espial'
tions. The writer's attack on the Sea -
forth High School is based on a sho t
paragraph in .your.columns announci g
the results of the late . examination .
He characterizes this as ._a mean a d
contemptible way of advertising, al o
as an "ingenious and cheap way." T e
reply is simple : (1.) The Minister f
Education first set the example by pu
lishing a circular with the results from
all the schools in tabular form. He
specially recommends. the publication
of such facts in the local papers. See
his instructions to examiners at the en-
-trance examination. (2.) The Colle-
giate Institutes at Collingwood, Brant-
ford, Hamilton and St. Catharines' have
very often published such results in
their advertisements in the Globe and
Mail. Is it a sin for a High School to
do the same ? (3.) Almost every local
paper has been in the habit of collect-
ing the results from all the schools it
could. The Sarnia Observer, for ex-
ample, lately printed, along with its
own, the results from 15 or 20 other
schools. (4.) The students and their
friends are in anxious suspense- to heiar
how the matter has gone.—success or
the reverse. The public, who pay for
these schools, wish to know how they
have stood this ordeal, which tests tie
efficiency of teachers and tries the c n-
tinnity of purpose, the physical stren th
and endurance of their pupils perk s
more severely than these qualities : re
tested anywhere else outside the ho or
examinations of the great universiti s.
Is it not rather contemptible to insi • xi -
ate that this information_is a mere • d-
vertising dodge ? (5.) The Cana e a
School Journal for September sa

that the results of the various exami a -

contention, that as good and, in many
cases; better work was done in he

The writer states that "Collingwc
Institute succeeded in passing more
the late examination than any of
school in the Province." This happ
to be wrong. That Institute is a firs
class school with which we have
fault to find, but according to the pu
lished reports it passed 46, while a
other school passed 50 or more. 11
says the whole class wrote at the Inst
totes. This is wrong, and the writ
must have meant it for "people wh
are ignorant of school affairs." At S .
Marys, for example, the intermedia e
class was between 75 and 100, yet onh
