George Stephen.
Many MCA' are wondering what mo-
tive Mr. George Stephen, of Montreal
eari have for eugaging in such gigantic
undertakines as his name is connected
with. Bauling, woolleu mills, lumber-
ing companies, the Pacific Syndicate,
Atlantic and Northwest Railway, etc.,
all claim a share of his attention. He
ia already a milliouaire, has a fine
house, a hospitable wife, and. neither
chick nor child to inherit his wealth.
Ile has all the social distiactiou he can
have in a democratic country. He has
few enemies end plenty of friends. It
-
must be that he is one ef these Napole-
onic men who must have something to
overcome or then. dio. George Stephen
is oneof the most remarkable men of
the age He eaised himself from being
aweaver's apprentice until he is a
millionaire and the Canadian Vander-
bilt, witb a strong chalice of his at least
equalling his American prototype in
wealth. Yet Vanderbilt has said that

The congregation of St. Andrews'
shurch, Strathbroy, are about to extend
a unanimous call to -Rev. Dr. McLeod, of
Paris, to become their pastor.
-Prineipal Cockburii:of the Upper
Canada College, has resigned his posi-
tion. High School Inspector Buchan,
of Hamilton, will prcOably receive the
appointment.
-Immense quantities of wild plums
have been gathered during the past
few :weeks in Southern. Manitoba, and
still wagon loads of them remain un-.
pieked. They have been selling at
Nelsonville at fifty cents a pail.
-On Monday evening of last week
llobert Walker, of Paris, was returning
in a buggy from Brantford, when the
buggy caught a hitching post, which
frightened the horse. The animal ran
away, throwing Mr. Walker out vio-
lently to the ground and badly hurting
-Two of• Henry Ward Beecher's
brothers, both ministers, have retired
to live m the comparative solitude of
. the Catskill Mountains in Ulster
County. With stream, lake and moun-
tain for comrades, they enjoy the ser-
enity of communion with nature in
her most picturesque and impressive
haunts.
Laycock, M. P., has just died,
only a fortnight after his father, who
left hira an income of about £40,000
per annum. He had been to attend his
father's funeral at a country house
near Newcastle. Several rooms were
being newly painted, and Mr. Laycock
complained of the paint affecting him.
He went to Eastbourne, and there died
froes the effects. The bulk of Ins prop-
erty was entailed on his son, a boy
about 14 years sad.
-The drought in the South con-
tinues. Distressing reports come from
Virginia and mauy parts of North Caro-
lina. The information shortens the to.
tobacco and peanut crop nearly a,and the
cotton crepe of Virgiuia and North
Carolina one fourth. The crops west of
the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad -
aro an almost total failure. Many
Virginia farmers aro eating stock for
want of forage. The people as well as
animals are suffering for -mite/ and
corn, and the flour 'Mlle run by water
are euspended. Fires in the lumber
swamps are feared.
The latest advices concernino -the
dreadful disaster of the sinking of the
steamer Teuton show that the loss of
life was -even greater than was at first
reported. The thirty women and
children afloat in a small boat, concern-
ing whose safety some hope was retained,
is now definitely known te have been lost.
It is now claimed that the hest of order
was maintained until the vessel sank on
her way to shore. At the time of the
accident the moon was shiniug, but a
haze along the shore tended to confuse
those to whom the guidance of the ship
was confided.

Language can but feebly describe the
pangs of rheumatism. This malady is
one of the most obstinate which tor-
tures humanity, and yet there is a
specific which will overcome it and pre-
vent its recurrence. The name of this
sovereign remedy is Dr. Thomas' Eclec-
tric Oil, a combination of six of the
best known medicinal oils, the remedial
efficacy of which is not weakened by
evaporation, since it contains no alcohol
to render it volatile. On this account,
as on many others, it is superior to all
other liniments, lotions and other
remedies used externally and has this
further advantage that it is used inter-
nally as well. It is an incomparable
specific for lameness, stiffness, burns,
bruises, frost bites and other bodily
troubles treated outwardly, and is a
grand medicine in throat and lung
diseases. Used for man or beast. Sold
by all dealers. Prepared only by Nor-
throp & Lyman, 'roronto, Ont. 710.a
Loss of Appetite in Children.
From Charles H. Colgage, manufac-
turer of flavoring extracts, 21 Black-
stone street, Boston. "Last spring my
little daughter, aged five, became very
much emaciated, with loss of appetite,
and great prostration of strength, so
much so that we were obliged to take
her out of - school. This continued.
through the sumtner and caused us
much anxiety. After trying various
remedies without deriving any benefit,
our family physician recommended the
use of Peruvian Syrup. After using it
one week we saw a marked improve-
ment in the child's condition, and in a
month she was rapidly gaining in
health and strength, her appetite being
excellent, At this date she is perfectly
well, with round, plump cheeks, and
healthy color, and is again attending
school regularly. I consider her restora-
tion to health entirely due to the Per-
uvian Syrup, and feel that I cannot too
highly recommend it as a tonic." Drug-
gists sell Peruvian Syrup. 710.52
Holloway's Ointraent an.d Pills.
These remedies are unequalled
throughout the world for bad legs,
wounds, foul Bores, and ulcers. Used
according to directions given with
them there is no wound, ---bad leg, or
-ulcerous sore, however obstinate or long
standing, but will yi8ld to their healing
and curative properties. Many f)oor
sufferers who have been patients in the
large hospitals under the care of emin-
ent surgeons, and have derived. little or
no benefit from their treatment, have
been thoroughly cured by Holloway's
Ointment and Pills. For glandular
swellings, tumors, scurvy, and diseases
of the skinthere is nothing that can be
used with so much benefit. In fact, in
the worst forms of disease, dependent
upon the condition of the blood, these
medicines, used conjointly, are irresis-
tible. 712.52
