—Rev. Samuel Collins, for nearly
fifty years pastor of the Baptist Church,
Grundisburgh, Suffolk, England, died a
few days since at the age of 81. He
was widely known in the denomination
and universally esteemed.
—Rev. Dr. Diedrich Willeres, pastor
of the Reformed Gernaan Church, Bar-

The Misses Begg, the daughters of
Robert Burns' youngest sister, are two
kind old ladies now living in a little
cottage near Ayr. When General Grant
was travelling in ScatIan.d he called
upon the sisters, and a correspondent of
the Detroit Free Press declares,gallant-

says the elder sister.

that the total capital expended in the

• —The only romance to be found in
the States hinges either upon the for-
gotten aboriginal race, or Upon the old
French and Dutch and Puritan colony
days, and. to these all the culture of
New England turns unceasingly in
Ria.watha, and Miles Standish in
"Evangeline," and Hester Prynne and
Diedrick Knickerbocker; in Thoreau's
"Indian Memories," and in Mr. Bur-
roughs' ''Pepacton." The recoil from
the vulgarized world of Long Branch
and Saratcga throws men of taste
naturally back -upon the red man of
the old colonial times and the Puritan
settlers of Salem and Plymouth.
—A man in Arizona territory, who
has carried on the foundry business for 25
years, writes that he has melted pig iron
and Bessemer steel together in cupola
furnace for the last three years with
tha- most satisfactory results, although
.the mixture cuts out the cupola twice
as fast as the melting of pig iron alone.
The castings, he says, are almost as
tough as wrought iron, and can be
• chipped or planed as easily as wrought
iron, A great deal of care, however,
is required in making the charges in
the furnace, as well as practical ex-
perience in handling the metal in its
melted state.
• —His Grace the Duke of Souther -

command a fire department, is no slave
to tyranny in dress. There was a gar-
den -arty $ fortnight ago at Marl-
borough House, given by the Princess of
Wales, and among the bidden guests
was the Dude. The weather was ex-
tremely warm, and in paying his re-
spects to their Royal Highnesses he as-
tonished every one—even those who
knew his independence of social preju-
dices—by appearing in a white linen
suit of clothes better adapted to the
weather than the occasion. -
—Orillia Pack -et : $1,000 is a high

in the third grade, ib.rid yet such is the
price Orillia, pays for the two successful
candidates who passed the late exam-
ination. A searching inquiry into the
causes that led to the plucking o
seventeen out of nineteen candidates is
necessary so that the blame may rest
on the proper parties. Until such in-
vestigation takes place it is hardly like
