—Since the 1st of July, the banks
have not been allowed to issue bills of a
less denomination than five dollars.
In connection therewith Mr. Loller,
Comptroller of DODaiteiOn. Currency,
says that the Government had. not
issued any four dollar bills yet, and. it
was not known whether any steps
i
would be taken in that direction. It s
thought that the circulation of tour
dollar bills will be abolished en-

—A valuable span of horses belong-
ing to Mr. MacWatters, of the township
of Osgoode, was killed by lightning a,
few days ago. It seems that young Mr..
MacWatters was mowing a field of hay
when the thunderstorm commenced.
He ceased working and tied the horses
to a rail fence, sitting down himself on
the other side of the fence. Suddenly
he was dazed by a flash of lightning,
sai.d on recovering found that both
horses had been victims to the electric
bolt. Mr. MacWatters, although suf-
fering by the loss of the horses, vvhich he
estimates at $300, is thankful that he
escaped with his life.
—A young man named George Miller,
who is on a visit to the village of Card-
inal, Grenville County, was unpacking
his trunks, and among other artfeles a
pistol, which was picked up by a child,
who was present in the room with him.
The ehild was cautioned to handle the
pistol very carefully and leave it down,
but the owner replied that it was not
loaded. After this the child in hand-
ling the pistol accid entallyp ailed the trig-
ger, when the pistol was diseharged
and the ball entered, the middle of the
owner's thigh and passed downwards in
the leg. Although two physicians prob-

gentleman from Manchester, England,
wh.o is making a tour of the world, isi
now in Ottawa. Before returning to
England he will visit the Eastern and
Western States, Japan, China, India,
and Australia. He has been in Canada
for several weeks, during which time he
has visited several parts of Quebec and
la.nitoba. Before leaving he will pay
a visit to the principal points of inter-
est in Ontario. Mr. Harris is very
ranch pleased with what he has seen
of Canada, and thinks that Manitoba, is
a beautiful country. He met the Duke
of Athol°, who had been on a trip to
Manitoba and the Northwest, at Win-
nipeg. The Duke remarked to him
that he was returnietg to Scotland both
a sadder and a wisei' man, as since he
had seen the Canadian Northwest he
did not see how it was possible for Brit-
ish tenants to compete with the people
of Canada, and he saw nothing of it but
a reduction of rents all round.
