—Dr. Wild, in his sermon in Bond
street Church, Toronto; Sunday night,
said: You cannot get your husband to
come to this church', and keep coming;
what will you do? Persuade him.
You have argued with him every time
about it, you say. Perhaps there has
been a little too mach arguing. Well,
tell him not to go ---that may answer
better. I used to have a horse that al-
ways backed up when he came to a
cross road, and refused to go on Final-
ly 1 turned the horse round - before
got to every cross road, and so got by.
So tell your husband not to go to
church, and he will be sure to come
before a month. If your husband does
not go to church, but goes somewhere
else on Sunday night, why, go with
him.

—Last week Mr. J. W. Tibeaudo, of
Ailsa Craig, had a narrow escape from
being poisoned by potato bugs. Mr.
Tibeaudo, who is Grand Trunk Railway
agent at, Ailsa Craig, yearly raised. the
finest potatoes 1.tt the two townships.
One secret of success is (so he affirms)
that he never uses Paris green.itt
order, therefore, to keep the pest down,
he and his numerous boys every morn-
ing move through the vines and care-
fully collect the bugs in handfuls.
1 Whilst doing so Mr. Tibeaudo wiped
the perspiration frona his forehead with
his hands. Shortly after his head be-
gan to swell and sharp, shooting pains
were experienced. The medical gentle-
man in attendance at once prescribed

very narrow escape.
—Work has been commenced on the
Southwestern railway, in spite of the
refusal of the city of Winnipeg to aid it
by way of bonus. Mr. Brown, the con-
tractor, has sublet the first section of
twelve miles, the engineer has set out
with four parties of surveyors to survey
and locate the line West of the Assini-
boine river, and it is confidently ex-
pected that fifty miles of the road will
be graded this fall. The Winnipeg
Times looks hopefully forward to the
extension of the road westward to the
Rooky Mountains; and as it will run
the whole distance through a very fer-
tile country—without an enormously
expensive beginning and ending, as in
the case of the Canada Pacific—the
knowing ones profess to think that the
Southwestern people have one of the
most valuable pieces of property on the
continent.
—One day last week, as two sisters
were coming south on the railway
track, near Toronto, one being in ad-
vance of the other, the first was met by
a man who asked the road to the city.
Before the girl had time to reply she
was suddenly caught by the shoulders
and thrown down the embankment, the
man falling over her. She struggled to
get free, but was held by the man. She
screamed and called for help, her cries
being responded to by two men working
in a field near by, who succeeded in cap-
turing the villain after a run of half a
mile, and held him: until a constable
arrived. Information was laid charg-
ing him with assault, and the man;
who gave his name as Brown, was
brought up, entered a plea of guilty,
and sentenced to two months in Jail with
hard labor. He eheuld be well flogged.
—A very melancholy accident occur-
red ha Toronto on Saturday evening
last. A young girl from Hamilton,
named Mary Burke, was visiting some
friends in the city, awl. in the afternoon

going from the island to the city, and
seeing two young men starting across in
a, skiff she asked them to carry her
across the bay. t hey consented, and,
all went well until they reached the
city side. A barge was lying in next to
the wharf, and the young men conclud-
ed to row up to it and get out on it.
One of the men got out all right, but as .
the other man andthe young lady were
getting out, the skiff suddenly shot
backwards, and they both fell into the
water. The young man eanae to the
surface and was rescued by his com-
rade, but the girl never rose again, and
her body was grappled for and found
about half an hour afterwards. It is
