Goderich, on Saturday, and capsized.
The crew were two hours. in the water,

--The Cheese factory near Londes-
boro was sold under power of mortgage,
on Friday, Mr. Wm. Jenkins, the
mortgagee, being the purchaser, at
$600. It originally cost nearly double
this sum.

-The Township Council of Stephen
give notice that they will pass a by-law
on the 22nd day of August next pro-
viding for the deepening of Mud Creek
in that township, the borrowing of
$2,700 on the credit of the township for
. the prosecution of the said work, and to
levy and•collect a special assessment on
the properties to be benefitted thereby
for the liquidation of the debt thus in-
curred.
-An old lady of 84 years, named
Tinkler, who has resided for some time
past at Whitechurch, in the township
of East Wawanosh, died very suddenly
at Mr. Jas. Carr's, Lower Wingham, on.
the 12th inst. It appears she had
walked to the railway station at Wing --
ham, but being too late for the train,
walked back to Mr. Carr's, where she sat down in a chair, end shortly after-
wards fell to the floor and expired al-

-During the sharp thunder storm on
Sunday before last the lightning struck
one of the chimneys on Mr. 18iastie's
house on the ninth con., Howick, com-
pletely demolishing the part extended
above the roof and splitting it from kep
to bottom. Although one of the family
lay sleeping on a, bed near the chimney,.
he was not at all injured. The damage
to the building itself was only trifling.
-Mr. E . L. Johnson,' photographer,
of Goderich, has a black Spanish hen
which is in the habit of laying eggs
measuring 8 by 61 inches. There are
not many breeds of hens that can beat
the black Spanish for laying. 'Another
hen, belonging to Mr. John Storey, of
Goderich, recently hatched out a chick-
en with four well formed legs, two
wings and one body branching from a
single head and a forked back -bone into
two tail ends. They have remarkably
smart hens in Goderich.

butohersf cattle were firmer in price
to -day, but the prices of all other kinds
continue about the same as last week,
or from 2/c to 3c per lb. A lot con-
sisting of three dry cows and five heifers
one and two years old, were sold at $18
per head Yearlings sold at from $11
to $15, cording to size and condition.
Shipping cattle.were sold at from 5c to
5-io per lb. Sheep and . lambs were
very scarce, and considerably higher
prices wire asked for them. A drover
who hal a flock of good lambs received
considerable attention from the butch -
ars, and for one of the best he refused
the offer of $4.50. Good sheep are in
demand for:shipment to Britain. Hogs
area little more plentiful and sell at'
