SHOP BURNED. -011 Sunday last the
blacksmith shop belonging to Mr. Paul
Morris, of Lea,dbury, McKillop, was
'burned to the ground, with a loss of
about 0200, and no insurance. This
loss seems to be but little, but when it
is about all the worldly possessions a
man has it is a good deal, and this
seems to be the case with Mr. Morris,
but he is a young man who is fall of
energy, and we have no fear but that he
will pull through.
BRIEFS.—A young lad, son of Mr..
Pollard, who resides near this place,
was amusing himself a few days ago by
jumping out of a wagon, when he fell
and injured his arm so severely that he
cannot use it.—Mrs. Charles Davis, who
has been under medical treatment for
some time, is recovering.—The residence
of Mr. Duncan McCallum, of McKillop,
not far from here, was burned to the
ground about 3 o'clock on .Saturday
morning. Most of the furniture was
saved, but still the loss will be consid-
erable.

II -urn 1 ey.
STILL THEY COME.—Mr. John Ryck-
man, a little north of this village, made
in his Cider mill, on the 12th inst., one
hundred and thirty gallons of cider.
This is a rare occurrence for this sea-
son of the year.
CONVALESCENT.—We are pleased to
learn that Mrs. Andrew Stewart, of
Eldad, who has been for some time
suffering from a severe attack of that
very prevalent disease, inflammation, is
now slowly recovering.
IMPORTINT.—Mr. George Steacy, of
this village, is now to be seen almost
daily operating on horses afflicted with
ringbone, and although a large number
of the cases resigned to his treatment
have been pronounced hopelessly in-
curable, he invariably porforms a per-
fect and instantaneous cure. As there
are evidences of the virtue of his treat-
ment around, us on all sides, we are not
at all surprised to see so many availing
themselves of the opportunity of re-
lieving valuable animals of a disease
which, if allowed to pursue its course,
renders them utterly valueless.
THE FIRST OF THE SEASON.—A very
• sociable time was spent in the Belle-
ville Hall on Wednesday evening last,
in the capacity of a "hop.” After a
large number of smiling youths had as-
sembled, who for some time previous
had been feasting upon, the pleasures
of anticipation, Mr. Robby Burns was,
as a matter of course, called to the
front, and through the active instru-
mentality of his sweet, melodious voice,
secured prominence for quite a number
who had never tripped the toe previous
to this occasion. All present figured so
prominently that we feel much delicacy
in making special mention of any, and
shall not do so except -in the case of one
young gentleman from Rodgerville,
whose graceful movements were con-
spieuous s he glided about the hall,
keeping time to the strains of ane of
our favorite •waltzes The ba kept
rolling until the first gray streaks of
dawn were visible in the eastern
horizon, when all repaired to their re-
spective homes throngh the cool and
placid. beams of the flale new moon, to
recount the events of the evening, and,
consign themselves to a calm and re-
freshing slumber, indispensable to the
resuscitation of both mind and body
after such an occasion, and from which
many did not awake until the sun had
attained his meridian glory, and we are
told that an amateur whose nocturnal
adventures had been few and compara-
tively insignificant previous to the one
in question, did not awake from his
easy slumbers until the robin redbreast
wad singing the daylight down the west
on the following eyeping, when, upon
being aroused, he *bed his eyes, and
after collecting his scattered senses, he
emerged out into the open air, and was
greatly mystified to observe, as he sup.
posed, the sun setting in the morning.
