The BeneilLts of Hybridwing.
The New York Tribune, of a recent_
date, says : The New Garden Pea,
nAmericau Wonder," affords a good
illusation of the immense value to
mankind of those modern genii -The
art of hybridization, and the press and
mail. Mr. Charles Arnold, of Paris, On-
tario, has attained several decided snc-
°asses among hianumerous and skilfully
directed crossings; but never, perhaps,
made such a strike as when he obtain-
ed the seed from which this pea came
forth. The parents were Little Gem,
&good prolific dwarf, and the Cham-
pion of England -late, tall, brit alae
finest of peas. The new kind seems to
have the fine flavor, size and marrowy
texture of the last, with the convenient
stature., productiveness and earliness of
the Little Gem ; thus, fortunately com-
bining the best good qualities of both
parents ; which, of course, the progeny
does not always or very often do. And,
thanks to modern means of distributing
both information and seeds, it will not
be long until all who like green peas in
their perfection of marrowness and
flavor will be able to make a trial of
this now famoussort, equally admired
and praised both here and in Europe. Oder druggists rep

Prof. Leone Levi tells us that the S 'mach, Liver a
proportion per 1,000 of persons commit-
ted for drunkenness in England and
Wales is 7, while in Ireland it is over

ulation of Ireland was arrested for

official relief or was officially arrested tees will positively cure Bright's dis-
for being drunk. The estimated value eaSe, or any diseases of the kidneys or
of spirits and beer consumed in Ireland
during the famine year of 1879 was
about £9,375,000-a sum exceeding half
the total annual valuation of all Ire-
land. In that year a sum equivalent
to nearly two-thirds of the annual value
of Ireland was expended in relieving
distress and supplying liquor. It is
a- noteworthy fact that the operation of
the Sunday Closing Act in the first year
of its application (1879) reduced the
number of arrests for drunkenness by
nearly 9,000, and the total value of
spirits and beer consumed by over
L1,500,000. The movement which cul-
minated in that particular Act em-
braced men of all creeds and classes in
Ireland, and it is one of the few bless-
inga she has conferred upon herself. It
is an evidence of the great dormant
pohtical force which might be asserted
by the stable and true men of Ireland,
and encourages hope' that the influence
of the "great mastaid" may yet be shat-
tered by the consolidated power of com-
mon sense Ireland, finding its expres-
sion in a current of healthy public
opinion. Meantime the multitude of
pot -houses in poverty-stricken districts
is at once the memorial of magistrates'
work and the sign -post to guide a. Par-
liament sincerely anxious to do true
" justice to Ireland." The prevailing
custom in remote districts is to com-
bine the spirit license with all other
branches of trade. Drinking is found
to increase business, for a muddled brain
takes an optimist view of shop debts.
In remote distriots nothing hardly can
be bought except in a house also selling
spirits, so great has been the anxiety of
the local magistrates not to make in-
vidious distinctions in granting licenses.
The poor, underfed people, in the trans-
action of their little business, are thus
foroed face to face with great and sore
temptation. What wonder if they get
drunk ? What chance have men
so situated of keeping sober ? These
districts are drunken that naagistrates
may not be unpopular, and that inflated
credit may yet increase.-Bittekwood's

Gray's Syrup of Red Spruce
Gum.
Bret Harte in one of his charming
sketches tells of a school mistress who
was accustomed to take long walks in
the pine woods of California for the
benefit of the balsamic air. There is
more in this treatment than most people
will be inclined to credit. We see the
pines and spruces have been brought in-
to requisition in the eause of medical
progress. Gray's Syrup of Red Spruce
Gum -a thoroughly scientific prepara-
tion -provides this treatment in a con-
centrated form, and has, after 20 yeara'
test, proved itself the most satisfactory
cure extant for coughs, colds, lung and
throat affections. Price 25 and 50 cents
