mittee appointed by the Council 1to
form a new Hose Company, met in the
Town Hall on Monday evening lak,
_ '
when a f all company of twenty men was
organized, and the following officers
were elected.: Captain, Joseph Abell;
Ist Lieutenant, U. PiUman ; 2nd Lieu-
ten-aut, D. Woods; Secretary and Tr4s-
urer, R. Laidlaw. The Captain 4p -
pointed the following to act as brandla-
raela : W. H. Cline, George Bills and 0.
Rogam; It was' decided to have the
Company -known as Sitar HOBO Company
No. 1. 1,
NOT Too IATIA YET. - We Stated
some'time ago that the hotel keepers of
this town having failed to make appli-
cation to the Council for a reduction of
the license fee before the first of Margh,
_
that the Council could not after t.'at
,_
date alter the license by-law, and that
consequently the license fee must re-
sasin for this year at the old figure.
This was the view then taken by the
Council ' and the hotel keepers, and in
accordance with the old Act was oor-
reot. But, at the last Session of the
Legislature, an amendment to the Act
was passed. On account of that
amendment not becoming law until t e
first of March, it contains a ch PCO -
- .
"ding that for the year 1881 an
v.i yby-
law regulating the license fee can be al-
tered, repealed, or amended at n ti. 0
s 'y
before the l5th of May; 'So there is a
probability that our Council will yet
have ihe-pleaaure of dealing with the
license question, that is, unless the ho-
tel keepers have changed their minAs
since last January and are now con nt
to pay the larger fee, which we hop( is
the case. I -I)
I
Tia,B FALL WHEAT. -Considerable con-
.
Corn, is manifested on all hands abdiat
the fall -wheat. Some ft 76
have examined it Bay that at least one-
third of it is gone beyond redemption,
while others assure us that it does not
look worse than in former years at this
: time of the Season, amd ,that there is yet
- a prospect of an abundant yield. [111
rany places, however, we can say from
personal observation it looks pretty
.
sick. But the roots may be all nglit,
aj-'though the tops are -completely goiie.
lqa-ny fields look as black as the middle
mf the road, while very few have the ap-
pearance one woiald like to' Bee. ,A
w.arm shower of rain would now havol a
raost beneficial and invigorating effect,
. and would enable a person to judge
. much more correctly from .Observation.
From information and persbnal obs6r-
Tation, we would Bay that what vi)as
eixly sown and well put in. gives fair
omise, but what was late sown a
.Td
U e land poorly cultivated, will stand a
poor chance. We do not. think that
even the most sq,ugaine now anticipate
&B good a gbrieral yield as last year.
