—Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Secord, of
Townsend, Brant oounty, celebrated
the fiftieth anniversary of their mar
riage on Tuesday last week. The
couple are aged 74 and 64 years respec-
tively, and they have resided within a
few miles of their present home ever
since their birth.
—Arrangements have been made
whereby telegraphic communication be-
tween Europe and the west coast of
South ADL1GrieB, will be had by way of
the United States, Mexico, Central Am-
erica, and Panama, instead of vio Portu-
gal and Brazil, as at present. This will
save about 8,000 miles in distance and
$6 a word its cost.
—An old colored man named Daniel
Webster, died in Chicago about a year
ago, and inttead of being a pauper, as
was generally supposed, it was found
he left property valued at $12,000.
This was claimed by Eliza Mitchell,
who had lived with him. Luoerna and
Mary E. Webster, children_ by Web-
ster's wife, whom he had deserted. 30
years ago in, Detroit, and who have till
lately been residents of the township of
Tilbury, Out., contested the claim in
Court, and have been awarded the pro-
perty as the only rightful heirs.
—John G. Graner, of. Buffalo, died
recently in Westville. He was a na-
tive of Warteinberg, Germany, and at
the time of his death was 90 years of
age. He had been a soldier and fought
under Napoleon L He was with Bona-
parte in the unfortunate campaign
against MOSCOW, and witnessed the
burning of that city. Out of 180 sol-
diers of Germau extraction in his com-
pany, only 18 returned alive, and most
of these were seriously wounded. Gra-
ver fought in 36 pitched battles, and
was wounded for the first and only time
at the Battle of Waterloo.
—A horse owned. by a man in Lind-
say, which had only been home from
the shanties a short time, died last
week from a disease of the hoof which
has puzzled all the horsemen in that
town. It seems that for some time the
horse's feet had bean very sore, and
blood was noticed. issuing from around
the hoof. The horse suffered a good
deal of pain and was very restless. On
Friday last when in his stall he knock,
ed the hoof against a board and it fell
off, lealvina the bare flesh exposed. The
other boorfell off shortly afterwards,
and the poor animal died on the Mon-
day following. There is talk of the
case being submitted to Prof. Smith,
of Toronto, for an explanation of the
disease.
—An interesting wedding took place
in Zion church, Waterloo township,
one morning lately. Miss Caroline
Elsley, woo bad for some years been
organist of the ,church, was married to
Mr. E. Bracey, and the occasion drew a
large congregation. The bride was
dressed in a plum colored silk, and
looked remarkably. well, as did also the
groom, who is a fine specimen 'of phYd3i-
cal manhood. At the close of the for-.
mal service, the minister, on behalf of
the trustee S of the chnr3h, presented
Mrs. Bracey with a large and. hand-
somely bound copy of the Holy Scrip-
tures, partly in recognition of her ser-
-vices as organist, and partly on account
of this being the first wedding held in
the church. -

—The funeral of a victim of small-
pox took place at Chicago, one day last
week. At the gate of the cemetery only
three pall bearers carried the coffin.
They requeated the fourth to assist, but
he refused. The corpse was then
thrown in the centre of a rubbish pile.
The pall bearers commenced a. fight,
which was finally participated in by all
present. Picks and shoVels were nsed,
and a number of the mourners were
badly injured, the meanwhile the coffin
was lying face downward. Some of the
female relatives endeavored to turn it,
and wrenched off the lid, and the corpse
rolled down an incline toward the road,
the 'women shrieking, the men yelling
and. the crowd fearing the loath-
some disease commenced to stampede.
The health officer afterward went to
the scene.

—It is well known to country people
that• it is an easy matter to become lost
on the prairie, especially at night. Pre-
vious to the late storm, when the snow
was light, an amusing incident occur-
red some distance west of Emerson.
Mr. W—, an excellent man, was re-
turning home from a neighbor's house,
and upon being reminded that he might
lose himself, he' declared that he knew
the way home as well ag he knew the
way to his bed. After a good walk he
found himself, as he thought at his own
door, but upon entering he discovered
that he was in another man's house,
about a mile from his OWD. home.
Making a fresh start he advanced in
- what he thought to be a straight line,
and, at length "his lonely cot appeared
in view." Upon entoring he found that
he was in the house he had left about
half an hour before. This time the
good. man started off with his bewilder-
ed visitor, determined to see him home.
Alter a very long walk the house was
reached. and the escort kindly asked in
to-warno, himself and. light his pipe,
when, to the amusement of both, they
found they were in the house they had.
started from. They finally concluded
that after sunrise woulI be time enough
to Baal° the next start.
