MIEREANO Colmar, Colorado, Feb. 23,188L Following the great drought of laa, spring and summer, we are- having a very severe winter. Snow began to faL in October, and since about the first of November 'the ground has been covered more than half the tirae. At the same time the cold has been continuous and intense. •. For the last four month there have been only two or three night when it did not freeze, and nearly ever week the thermometer has marked point below zero.. This ia a _eountra . famous for its mild climate and wher snow is not expected to lie more than few days, has rather astounded the in habitants. I am afraid that the ma jority of the invalids who came her last fall for the benefit of their heat will not send home very flattering re ports as to the climate and country. Some of your correspondents in Mani tam and Dakota write back, "We d not -feel the cold here like we used to i Ontario." These parties must be ver new in the Northwpst. When th glamor of novelty wens off they wil find that cold is cold, one place as wel as another, and that the mercury, i the long run, is the best and sures judge of the article. Intense cold alai is not nearly so severe as cold arid win together, but I have yet to hear of prairie country which is not also windy country, Here in Colorado w are about a. thousand miles south o Manitoba, and the air is as dry, an clear as anywhere, yet when it is Col we know and feel it too. I have se many winters in Ontario less Bey than the present one here. Probabl one reason why people who go fro Ontario to the Northwest think the do not feel the cold as they did at hom is that they live more in, the open ai and are better inured to 'severe weath er. I know sheep herders here wh have not been inside a house all white They have followed their flocks all da and at night have slept in an opeia ten in the brush, cooking and eating'thei food in the open -air. These men not warmly clad. Two pairs of ea, overalls, a canvas coat and waist, and a blanket generally comprise t principal protection against the wet er. .. Yet they do not complain of col and are as fat and happy as if they ha satby the chimney corner all Winte fared sumptuously and slept betwee feather beds. Stock of all kinds has suffered terr bly, and the losses will be very larg A large proportion of the cattle an sheep in this section were moved int Western Kansas last summer, on a count of the drouth and sanity feed here. The winter has also bee severe in Kansas, and it is a questio which will come out with the less los those who drove their herds out or bhp: who remained. There is a much grea, er growth of grass to the acre in Kt4s, than here, but it does not cure so we for winter feed. Stockmen there a, their animals fill up on the grass, b it seems to do them no good. In one the Pueblo papers last week there we., statement that two passengers on l t Atchison and Santa Fe Railway conn ed 867 dead cattle in sight of the tra in a apace of sixty miles, between Dod City, Kansas, and Las Animas, Colo ado. The railroad between these poin runs along the Arkansas River, and t cattle for many miles back drift tow the river for water, so that most of t1 dead animals will naturally be in sig of the track. Still, this indicates some extent that the losses all over t country mast be enormous, which fully borne out by other account In this and adjoining • counties , the was very little grass at the beginning winter, and most of the stock stru the winter spring poor. Seeing th half the time since the first of Nove ber what little grass there is has be covered with snow, it is really surpri ing that any stock at all igleft alive the country. Animals in Colorado c stand a great deal of starving. cattle I see about are staggering . po yet most of them will pull through, a by August will be beef fat. The, pe centage of loss in sheep, I believe, w be even greater than in cattle. 1 kn of some individual cases where, with the last fourteen months, men haveb: almost their entire .herds wiped 10 Sheep men console themselveawith tine reflection that their business recupertit quicker than any other, and with a f good years they should afford one b one. • Among all this disaster, the conditi of the country, from- a pastoral point vie -w, is more hopeful now than for good many years past. From the i manse fall of snow the ground is th oughly saturated with moisture, and t prospect is that in a few weeks th will be an abundance of green gra There is now comparatively little sto in the country, and moreover it h acquired such a bad na.me, that it is not likely fresh stock will be driven 'n to any great extent, so that .for a f w ty of grass it to stand or farme a good ti are full of owing with ough and to a ditch 'n - Celorado. As a consequence of the drouth of t last two years hay and fodder are ve scare and bring enormous prices. is selling now at about $25 a, ton. K of that used is Kansas . baled h brought in by rail, and. 8, very p quality.of feed it makes. In the mini towns hay brings a much higher fig than this.
