their male children for grain,
leaving the girls to die from cold
hunger.
—An old lady, Mrs. Cooper, of
ross,. was buried last week. She li
to the advanced age of 104, and up to
short time ago was in possession of
her faculties, and enjoyed comparati.
ly good health.
—Rev. Dr. Stewart, formerly of H
Ilton. and who went out to Calif or
for his health, has accepted a call
the Baptist Church in San Jose. T
reverend gentleman's health has ve
much improved.
—The Arkansas Senate bas passed
bill appropriating $10,000 for a color
Normal School. This is practically
first step by Arkansas to educate
colored race. There has been a gre
change in the popular sentiment Buri
the past ten years.
—Mystic Pond, a beautiful sheet
water near Boston, has become a de
sea. Its water emits a foul odor, th
houses in its vicinity are discolore
fish cannot live in it, and ib has be
complained of as pestilential. There
something very mysterious about it.
—George H. Belais, a merchant fro
Dublin, who recently arrived in Broo
lyn, was taken sick and sent to the ho
pital by his friends a week ago. En
quiry disclosed the fact that Belais die
on Wednesday,: and was buried in th
Potter's Field. The hospital authori
ties say they did not notify his friend
because they had forgotten their ad
dress. -
—In court at Chicago, fecently, th
distribution of some land under a wil
was contested by a number of women
The judge retired for lunch, when ba
feeling between the parties culminate
in a fierce fight involving eight wo
men, one aged seventy. The row wa
quelled with difficulty by the attor
nays for the contestants. No damag
resulted except scratched faces and to
clothes.
—A frightful explosion occurred a
Manz & Co.'s coal mine at Robbins
Ohio, accompanied by appalling loss of
life. A man named Smith disobeyed hi
orders and attempted to pass through
forbidden room containing fire dam
with a lighted lamp in his hand. Im
mediately a terrific explosion occurre
and a hole was blown through the 15
feet of earth composing the roof. Abou
twenty men were at work, of whom six
were killed and a number dangerously
wounded. •
—The passengers from the lost steam-
er Josephine say she left Havana on.
Wednesday, February 2nd, and was
caught in a hurricane on Sunday. The
passengers, both men and women, work-
ed the pumps, but made no headway
against tis leaks. On Monday a lady
passenger asked some one to pray, and
a gentleman responded. Life preservers
were then given out, and seven boats
lowered. In the morning Ship Island
light was seen, and a tug rescued all the
passengers.
—On January 31st, at Rebellion,
Panama, where chain gangs were em-
ployed sweeping the streets, a soldier on
duty guarding a detachment of the
chain -gang had a dispute with a woman
named Mercedes' Cana, which continu-
ed until the man levelled his rifle and
shot down the poor, defenceless crea-
ture, who expired in a few minutes.
He continued shooting, wounding two
other women, one of whom has since
died. The soldier escaped, pursued by
the guard, which had orders to take
him dead or alive.
—Thefts of mail matter have recent-
ly been committed on the mail cars be-
tween Rochester and Chicago on the
Lake Shore trains-. Several arrests
have been made.. The police made the
most important arrest for five years in
the person of John P:Leist, assistant
weigher at the post office, on the person
of whom they found documents and
money to a large amsunt, and under
his lead the officers discovered in a
house of ill -fame valuables to the am -
omit of $12,000 to 15,.000 covered.
His method was to cut a slit in
the mail pouch and abstract the let-
ters.
• —An epidemic seems to have set in
in Montreal among married ladies to
free themselves from their lords and
masters. On Monday four ladies, some
of whom move in the highest circles in
the city, and all in good society, entered
suits for separation from their bust ands.
The reasons alleged are various, but in-
clude drunkenness, neglect, cruelty, and
in some cases adultery.. The following
are the names : Mrs. Winleter David-
son, wife of Thomas Davidson, a retired
broker ; Mrs.. Ellen Beaufoy-. Baylis,
wife of Arthur Baylis, wholesale grocer;
Mrs. Julia. Paquette Couture, wife of
-Alfred Couture, hotel keeper ; and Mrs.
Mary E. V. Gohier, wife of Leon Go-
hier, contractor. It would seem as if
the men were better satisfied with their
matrimonial engagementsthan the op-
posite sex, as only Thomas Allen, whole-
sale jeweller, has entered suit to be sep-
arated from his wife.
—Much alarm and excitement pre-
vails at Santa Fe, New Mexico, owing to
a sudden and unaccountable mortality
among cattle on the vast grazing plains
of the Territory. The epidemic is.
spreading in every direction, and the
carcases of the animals are strewn for
miles, hundreds dying every day, and
no remedy being as yet discovered to
check the fearful ravages of the pest.
The disease is a mysterious one, and
baffles all efforts at restraining its dead-
ly progress. Measures are projected for
the purpose of limiting the area of its
ravages, and a strict quarantine will
likely be established. Domestic cattle
which have grazed on the trail 'of the
infected herds, have caught the con-
tagion and: are perishing in scores. The
herders come into the city overwhelmed
with consternation, as they fancy that
the scourge is but a forerunner of some
pestilence which will attack•huinsn 1
ings. The loss will be felt , severely
some of the capitalists of the Terri,
who have embarked all they possess n
cattle; and a continuance of the e
der io at its present , dimensions tyre h-
ens' to rednoe many of them to bar k-
rnpioy.
