FEBRUARY 18, 1881.
A Huron Minister as Mission
arty in the Northwest.
The following letter trom the Rev.
Mr. Sieverir;ht, late of Goderich, who is
now connected with the Prince Albert
anissioii, Northwest Territory, was ad
dressed to Rev. Dr. Cochrane, of Brant-
: ford, chairman of the Home Mission
Committee of the Canada Presbyterian
church. Mr. Sieveright was personally
well known to most of: our readers, and
all will be glad to hear of his doings in
the Great Lone Land :
My Duan Sir,—I have now visited
all the ;Presbyterian stations in. this
section of country, and submit for the
oonsideration of your committee, a brief
but comprehensive report. They are
seven in number.
I. PRINCE ALBERT
is the first in importance. Presbyterian
population 42 families, not iucludinga14
Cree families, who have not removedlto
the Indian reserve. Two things are
essential to future progress—the erec-
tion of a church and manse, and having
two services every Sabbath. The et-
tendance, considering the cold, uncofn-
fortable . ,building, is encouraging—fre-
quently over one hundred.. The For-
eign Mission Committee have given two
acres as church' property on the front of
their lot, and ten acres further back as
a glebe. A building committee have
been appointed, and a, vigorous effort
will be put forth to erect suitable build-
ings. The era of log buildings is nearly
at an end. Several brick edifices .have
been erected, and that will likely be the
future material. Building operatiois
cost at least twice: as much as in On-
tario. Without outside aid it will be
impossible to complete buildings noels-
nary to hold our own as a denomination,
Prince Albert is on the border land of
civilization. The outcries of Pagan
Sioux, celebrating their religious rites,
often intermingle with the sounds Of
Christian praise and prayer.
2. M'BETH'S,
down the river, comprises 18 families
X13 Presbyterian. Three more intend to
settle on their claims in the spring.
The nearest family is five miles—the
farthest, 15. A belt of furs four miles
long intervenes. Beyoudi a settlement
has been begun never yet visited by any
minister.' Some progress has (near the
forks of the river) already been made in,
the liitcBeth settlement for the erection
of a place of worship.
3. FLETT's,.
twenty-two miles south; near the forks
of the road where the Winnipeg and
Carlton trails. meet: It contains 17
families— all Presbyterians. Four more
to settlein the spring. A building
committee has been appointed, and a
site given for a clzrch and burying
ground.
{ 4. RED DEER HILL,
twelve miles south. Four Presbyter-
ian families ; nine of other denomina-
tions.
5. RIDGE,
. twelve miles south-west. Eleven Pres-
byterian families ; 20 of other denom-
inations. A church was erected in this
settlement during the ministry of Rev.
T. McKellar. It was resolved that year
to remove it to a more central locality.
No agreement could be arrived at as to
the site. The timber ;sow lies useless
for building purposes, in several locali-
ties—a practical illustration of the folly
of trying to bring a church to every
can's door. There is hope of a new
edifice even here.
6. MINER'S,
fourteen miles west, Eleven Presby-
terian families. Indian element pre-
dominates.
7. C 1t .OT RIFER,
forty miles south-east by winter trail,
about 50 by the summer one. The
only houses the whole way are at the
Indian reserve, on the bank of the
South Saskatchewan, which must be
grossed going to Carrot River. A jour-
ney there alone is by no means unat-
tended with danger: The shafts of my
Sleigh broke, about half way in the, wil-
derness. After kindling a fire, and
spending three hours in the vain at-
tempt to repair them, there was no re-
source left but to walk with my horse
14 miles, over an unknown trail, ignor-
ant whether I would land at Fort La -
come or the place I was anxious to
reach—the thermometer 40 degrees be-
low zero. I was fortunate to- arrive at
the place of my destination, at 4 o'clock
in the morning, That evening I preac
ed to. an audience of 19 persons, inclu
ing one Cree. The present statistic
are eight families, and 28 young meta
who have taken up claims : nearly all
Presbyterians. It is one of - the most.
fertile spots in the Northwest.. Other,
settlements near—Carrot River, Pai-
Wah-Naha Lacorne and Stony Creek.
It is plain one missionary cannot d
anything like efficient work, in a fief
so extensive, among Presbyterian fares
ilies scattered over a region of 90 miles
long and 20 broad. All these stations
are situated in tracts of lan1, excellent
in quality, and increasing rapidly in
population. There has been no preach-
ieg at Carrot River, the Ridge, or
Miner's. Even with this abridgment of
. his labors, the health of the last mis-
sionary has been seriously impaired by
excessive work. There are only two
ways of it, either supply a sufficient
force of missionaries to overtake the
work, or else abandon half the stations!,
as has been practically done for Borne
time past; and allow denominations
more zealous to occupy the field. At
least two 4dditional laborers are needi-
eel. Who 'lean doubt the ability and
willingness of the Presbyterian church
in Canada to enter the wide doors of
usefulness God iu His providence has
thrown open to it in the Northwest ?
J.VnIES SIi VERIGHT.
The Gooseberry.
The gooseberry is a fruit which is not
as extensively cultivated in the Unite
States as in England, the extreme sus
ceptibility of the fruit to the attacks a
mildew discouraging Would-be growers.
What the mildew spares, the gooseberry
caterpillar lays claim to. As a remedy
for the ravages of the latter, the soil
should be removed from beneath the
bushes down to the roots, say some 3 o
4dnches, a layer of manure be place
over the roots and fresh soil put on to
of that, and if in, addition the soil ret
moved is dressed with quicklime, a
substance which insects particularly
dislike, the chances are that.the bush
es will be free from the pests and rel.
cover their health the following season
the e caterpillars have been a
all numerous during the summer, the
last brood is usually found in a chry-
selis state in the soil beneath the bushy
es, waiting for spring,. when they w'
emerge ready for the opening of th
campaign. They penetrate the loos
surface soil ani dive d

Camping out in the rine woods has
been recommended -to consumptive pa.
tients, and the Rev. Dr. Murray, in his
book on the Adirondacks, mentions a
remarkable cure from treatment of this
nature. Every one afflicted with put=
monary disease cannot make it eon-
venient to camp out, nor is it necessary,
when all the benefits of the treatment
are procurable by using Gi ay's Syrup of
Red Spruce Gum, a scientific prepara-
tion, vihich presents, in a concentrated
and agreeable form, all the virtue of
thus native medicinal gum. As a cure
forcougls, colds, sore throat and hoarse
nese, it is invaluable. Sold byall
chemists. Price 25 and 50 cenper
