The affair createdgreat excitement in the neigh- borhood. —One day last week a youth was in the shop of Mr. N. Robson, Clinton, explaining to him the working of a new kind of lamp which he had received from the other side, and which the young man was agent for. The oil used was said to be odorless, and to prove this the top of the lighted lamp was unscrewed, but the moment this was done the oil . ignited. In the ex- citement the burning lamp was thrown on the floor, where it continued to burn, there being nothing it could feed upon it soon exhausted itself, much to the. relief of those in the store. Hens all. Bu8ntsss.—Business is rather quiet in. our village at present, owing to the unpleasant weather we have ,been hav- ing for some time past. TALENTINEB,—Valentines are now the order of the day,and the number that have already passed through the post office here is something really aston- ishing, some of them causing the faces of our young friends to beam with de- light and others to darken with expres- sions of displeasure. PAID Us A VISIT. — Mr. Jamieson's singing class of Hills • Green paid his class here a visit last, week and a very pleasant time was spent by the classes, music being dispensed, to use an old ex- pression, by the half -bushel. We be- lieve the Hensell class intend soon re- turning their visit.. GeT.—Our Tillage has been made quite gay for the last week or so 'by the arrival of several large wedding parties. One of these came all the way from Cen- tralia and remained long enough to afford the Rev. A. Y. Hartley, of this village an opportunity of tying the knot. Mr. Hartley must be a great favorite with the marrying people, as they come from far and near to secure his services. TBA MEETING. — The tea meeting which came off here a short time ago in the Bible Christian Church, we learn, wan a. great success. After the tea, which was served in Fairbairn's Hall, all resorted to the church, where an in- teresting lecture was delivered by Rev. R. Thomas, of Clinton, on "The Trials and Triumphs of Protestantism." The Sabbath collections and proceeds of the tea meeting amounted to nearly $70. menmemseeetentoTuekeremith. SOME GOOD STOCK son SELF.LMr. Michael Heffernan, having rented his farm, intends Selling off his stock . by auction on the 1st of March. Mr. Heffernan has some very superior thoroughbred and grade stock and those wanting to purchase such will - find this an excellent opportunity; Mr. John C. Steele, who has sold his farm, sled intends having anextensive sale of stock and implements on the 15th inst.. FPRti SOLD.—Mr. H. Plumsteel, of•' Clinton, has purchased the Nichol farm on the Mill Road, Tuckersmith, from Mr. Forsyth, for the sum of $7,000. The farm contains 100 acres, and is one of the best in the township, only the buildings are • not extra good. • Mr. Plumateel intends erecting a new brick house on it shortly. Mr. Forsyth pur- chased it some years ago for one of his sons, but owing to the death of one son and the ill -health of the other, he could not work it to advantage, and had to dispose of it. He purchased it for the same price he received for it. • FEET FuozEN.. Mr. John James Elgie, son of Robert Elgie, Esq., of Tuckersmith, got his feet badly frozen on the cold Wednesday a couple of weeks ago. He was working in the woods on Mr. Elgie's farm in Stanley when the frost struck him. He did not know that anything was wrong with him until he came into the house at noon and was' sitting at the table, when his feet suddenly became in- tensely painful. On removing hitt boots and stockings he soon discovered the cause of the pain. He was laid up for several daes, but is now able to get around. again. Cbeecii.
