T H 14) APPLE B.E.
"Did I ever tell, you about Rastas
Marrying Judge Randolph's daughter ?"
asked grandmother, as I munched an
apple andhesat knitting in her high -
lacked rocker.
"Why, not" said L fancying saw a
story in la& retrospective gaze, "you
have told me about Thankful and, your
lb -other and your own courtship, grand-
mother, but of Rastus's never."
"Well, I'll tell you about it. Seeing
you eating that apple reminded me of
i , and, besides, to -day is the sixteenth
o November; Rastus's birthday came
on the seventeenth, and I remember it
was the day before, and almost exactly
s oh a day as this seventy years ago,
tattI was visiting them while Alex.
't nded General Court. Rastas , was
owing me his freedom snit, he'd be 21
is xt day, when ro.other came down from
t egarret with a tray of apples, looking
v xed enough.
"Apples keeping well ?" I asked. •
i" No, they must have got a little tech,
ed by the frost before they were gather-
ed. There's one whole ben beginning
to rot already, and I haven't no time to
e 'em, Mehitable's being sick."
ehitable was an old maid that help-
ed mother about the house.
'Why don't you have a bee ?" I ask-
ed for to tell the truth I wanted to see
theyoung folks, my old mates, you
kii,ow, and show them my baby, for I
thought he was the prettiest and smart -
es child that ever was. That was your
• un le William, dear. Besides, Squire
D olittle's niece, Mistress Randolph,
was a visiting them fron Virginny
w de her father was away in Englapd,
and I thought maybe she would come.
I'd heard a great deal about her, but I
hadn't seen her, though she had been
visiting at the squire's, then for six
months or so ; so I says, have a.bee.
'A bee?' spoke up mother, 'well,
now, I never 'thought of that. I'm
glad, Rusiaa, you spoke of it. What do
you say, •Rastus ? They are nothing
d.readful.'
"Lothrowingt 'em rot,' said he,
down an armful of wood with a crash.
He left the room after it, when I first
spoke of the bee, and now he straight- ,
ened up and looked so fierce at mother
that I spoke up quick as could be :
'I'I should think you would be asham-
ed to speak so to mother.' .
"'Mother don't mind what Rastus
say,' said he, going up to her and pat-
ting l her shoulder, and he smiled at her
iti such a tender way that I wondered
as II always did., ,way
was so changeable ;
quick, but loving, nobody minded what
Rastas said, that's true, bat everybody
liked him ; mother set more by him
than all the rest of us children, so we
thoaght, but she said she never knew no
difference, only he was her baby.'

it a irthd.ay party. I'll kill a goose
aud the white turkey that's been
shut up so long, and we'll have a real
frolic. Shall -I invite. Miss Randolph,
mother ?'
"'Why, of course, it wouldn't do to
slight the squire's folks.'
("That's so. She'd feel hurt, no
doubt, not to have a chance to soil her
prettY hands paring apples,' and he
went' off a whistaiog, but he didn't look
so h py as he tried to seem. I could
see t at he didn't more than half want
the p rtY.

at does he mean, mother ? Is
Mistress Randolph very proud ?'
'Why,' says mother, in a doleful
way, 'they say so, but I took tea at the
squire's a spell ago, and she was very
elphal and cheery., She didn't seem
rond to me, but she ain't like Mandy
mith.' .
'I should hope not, mother.'
