A E4eroic Death.
The following poetic extract from the
London Spectator cannot be without
interest at the present juncture. It
refers to the Seaham colliery explosion,
and to the heroic death. of Ltike Dixon,
a young unmarried man, who preferred
to remain behind and die with his
"putter" boy rather than leave the youth
to pass his last moments alone. The
circumstance is rendered all the more
ttuching from the fact that Dixon was
not the father of tbe boy, as is stated
by the poet:
• "Nay, stay with the lad,"
Down in the. deep black seam;
Huddled to-gether, dying and dead,
Far from the, day -world over -head,
Face to face, by a sudden fate,
With a horror of night precipitate;
Hidden away from the merciful Sum,
The death and the burial all in one,
By their fifties cut off in vain,
More than a battld counts its slain;
Huddled together man and horse,
In the grip of the *re -damp's watchful :force, -
Unsung heroes of simple mould,
All unchanged from theme of old,
To the olden truths, with a martyr's cry,
Ont at the depths they testify; •
And never has cede been read, I deera, 1
Nobler than that itt the deep, black seta,
Of love and courage the message sad, -
Only "Nay, I'll stay with the lad."
"Nay, stay with the lad,"
Down in the deep, black seam,
They found him living, and strong, and omad
In spite of the terror underground;
And they bade him come and live again
In the light bright haunts of living men,
And once more look the sunin the faze,
Andgladden in earth's beloved embrace'
Ent he lookedat his young boy, dead rordying,
In the midst of the shattered fragments lying -
Dying or dead -but powerless to move
At the help of man, or the voice of love, •
And sell lay dead where the child must die,
And he let deliverance pass him by ;
He atm his duty set straight before
In the love that livetbnfag evermore
And he put the proffefel freedom behind,
With never a thought of sell in mind;
And to life or to death run the trackless stream
He stayed with him in the deep, black seam,
And to prayer and to warning ono answer had,
A brave one, -"Nay, PE stay with the]ad."
'Nay, ill stay with the lad,"
Down in the deep, black seam;
Once again was the story told,
Old as Honor, as Poesy old ;
And the ragged miner, whose cares might be
• Something unknown to you or to me,
Rather than leave his bo Y below,
Alone in the grip of the larking foe,
Chose to the with him there and then,
lather than live with his fellow -men ;
Smoothed the pillow the child beneath,
Turned with him to the void of Death,
And to all mankind, in its strong self love,
Taught the unsolf proclaimed above;
And whate'er his sin, and whato'er his sorrow,
Chose the night without early morrow, -
Went to his Maker straight and free,
And pleaded his plea courageously ;
For his boy he lived, for his boy he died,
Aad the two together, side by side,
Before theidivine, eternal Throne,
Had nothing to plead but their love alone, -
And their, perchance, from the answer to prove,
That the greatest wisdom of all is love.
Self t be hushed while in places high,
The raany pass thoughts of others by, -
Let others starve, and let others bear
The woes that beset us everywhere, -
So the great be but free from the curse of death,
So the great but gather the traits of the earth,
So property flourish, and riches thrive,
And keep but the worldling's life alive
What is it to them that these grave things be ?
That these sights are given to who will see?
While wealth will prosper, denial dream,
Life's moral is told in the deep, black searrhtnai',
And angels rejoiee in that answer glad, - -
And human, -"Nay, stay with the lad."

ward Jenkins, ex -M. P., author o
"Ginx's Baby," "The Battle of Dork
ing," and other political satires, was go
ing to Canada to edit a paper. Whe
asked a few days ago what truth ther
was in the story, Mr. Jenkins exelaime
that he would rather go to Botany Ba
than edit a Canadian newspaper.
—A young woman about 18 years o
age called at the house of Mrs. Edwar
Galilean, of . Bay City, Michigan, and
asked perraission to leave her baby a
moment while she stepped in to see a
neighbor. Permission was granted, and
now Mrs. Callison is just one blessed
baby ahead, as the mother neglected to
reclaim her property. With its cloth-
ing was a note, which read as fellows :u
"I leave this baby for a present to you
to take and bring up as Your own, I
have had it baptized by Father Hibbert
Its name is Johnny, and if you do not
wish to keep it try and get a good place
for it, but, for G-od's Bake, do not put
it in the poor house. It is a goad baby,
and its birthday is on the 23rd of No-
vember.

• A Naction. of Heroes.
The Montenegrins are not unworthy
of their gallant Prince. The history is
one long epic, in which the deed of
heroism wrought in their mountain
home seem more fitted for the verse of
the poet than for the sober pen of the
historian. It is indeed hardly possible
to relate tb,e fortunes of this heroic
people without appearing to encroach on
the province of writers of romance, and
thus, as Mr. Gladstone said, "begetting
in the mind of the reader a restless:,
suspicion of exaggeration and. of fable."
The proportion of able men, ready and
expected. to bear arms in case of war is
higher in Montenegro than 'anywhere
else in the world.. Age clainas no ex-
emption. In wax with Turkey in 1862
corpses of children ander fourteen
years of age were often found on the
battle -field. The present Captain of
l'fiegush, Jur° Petrovie, narrowly
escaped. with his life at the age of
twelve.
Not long ago Prince Nikita asked a
youth where he gained the terrible scars
on his face. "I was wounded in a war
under ..111irko," said he. "How old
could you have been ?" "r was thir-
teen," replied the youth quietly. When
Montenegrin children are baptizeEt the
hilt of a dagger is given them to
kis. The baby in the cradle plays
with a pistol as with a coral. At the
font the gad -parents cry, "May he not
die in bed." Feeble old age vintdicates
its rights to share in the fray. qripples
compel their neighbors to oarrr them
to a post of danger, that they may fire
from the rocks on the ivaders. Even
women court the dangers of war. There
was one whose husband was a standard
bearer. Ele fell in battle and was
succeeded in office by the eldest of •his
grown sons. The son fell and. was
followed by a second, and he in turn by
a third. The woman's fourth and last
