paces nearer to his antagonist than the

equally bashful young lady to herhome.
As they approached the dwelling of the

were stopped on the street by an elderly

A Herald reporter yesterday over-
t eard the following conversation :
"Well, I'll be---"
"Don't," said a lady who stood neer.
nice looking lady she was, too, elderly
nd prim, but kind hearted, you could
II by just looking at her once.
"Marm," said the countryman in a
ort of defiantly apologetic tone, " you
• e very much mistaken. I belong to
t e church, too, I was going to say 'P11
e buttered,' and P11 be buttered if. I
on't sayit, and I'll be buttered if you
oaldn't be buttered yourself if the cir-
cumstances were likewise similar."
The countryman -you could tell he
as a well-to-do farmer by his big,
rown hands, and broad, honest face
nd his shiny new store clothes -had
_st dodged across West street under
a car horses' very_noses, and rushed
p to the ferry gate just in time to hear
e boat chains rattle, and see the boat
ide away from the bridge.
"Well, sir," said the elderly lady with
a smile, "I must acknowledge that there
i.. nothing immoral about being buttered,
bit 'don't think I would be -if I could
hip it, that is.

The lady had herself invited conver-
sation in the first place, it will be
noticed, aud, besides that, she was too
utterly respeeta, ble, so to speak, for any-
body to misconstrue the fact of her
talking with a stranger. He was res-
pectable, too. Even a policeman would
have admitted it without hesitation.
He was about 45 years old.
" You see," said he, and then he took
time to dispose of some of the parcels he
had. He put dowu a big basket that
be held in his right hand and a little
basket that he held in his left hand on,
the floor of the waiting room, and pick -1
ed a bundle out from under 'his left
arm and a little bundle from under his
right arm and piled them on top of the
baskets. Then he took some more lit-
tle bundles out of his Coat pocket which'
he searched for a pocketaliandkerchief.
Finding this, after so nie trouble, he
took off his hat to wipe his face and
two more little handles fell out from
that.
After he had, piled them up altogeth-
er he wiped the sweat from his face and
began his story. " You see I was just
going home, and I've missed the train,
and I can't get another till to -night."'
"That's too bad," said. the lady, sym-
pathetically. 'Thanksgiving Day , too."
Yes, but that ain't the worst of it.
I've got most all the dinner with me.
You see, my little Jim, he's only six
years old, mann, he's been very sick.
Ire fell in the barn and hurt himself
bad. Hurt his head, and. he got the
brain fever, an' the doctor said he'd die.
Of course we didn't want a Thankagiv-
‘3 ing dinner, for Jim's the youngest, and.
the other children felt as had. as his ma
and I did. But last night he .took
turn' an' about midnight the doctor
:mid he was out o' danger an' he'd get
well. I just bust right out oryin' when
he said it. Funny, were'nt it ? I hadn't
cried before. He's the prettiest, boy in
all Orange county, and he can whistle
louder and climb a bigger tree than any
other boy of his age you ever saw. Well,
