How to Keep St[eep Profitably.
The Southern S'talies offer an excel-
lent field for sheep husbandry. The
temperate climate, the abundance of
pure water, the cheapness ir gf e n cambe
and
the ease with which p s
produced and green feeding ^rop may
be grown, all invite the labors of the
shepherd. Vast tracts of land either
remain unoccupied br have been aban-
doned by the cotton planters as worn
out and unprofitable for their purposes.
Nutritious native grasses and fodder
plants cover these waste lands, or grow
spontaneously when the timber or scrub
vegetation is removed. The mountain
region is spec_ialiy adapted for this pur
snit,. and no morel - healthful pastures
exist than on the broad table lands and
the innumerable slopes and summits of
the complicated ran ges of the Appala-
chiau chain. Thi extends from West
Virginia to Georgia,including both of
these States. The rocks are limestone
and standstone ehiefly,but intermingled
with irruptive slates and traps, all of
which furnish a variety of soils, from
the light sandy loams to heavy clays.
Generally the heavier soils are covered
with a deep, black vegetable soil which.
produces the most luxuriant bluegrass,
that remains green, in the more south-
ern localities, all the - winter ; and
which, notwithstanding the altitude,
are rarely covered with snow so deeply
as to prevent the sheep from. feeding.
When this occurs the woods, which are
there sufficiently open to permit the
growth of grass, provide shelter and
food during the occasional storms.
This is the general character of the
mountain region of West Virginia and
North Carolina. The table lands of
R:ast Tennessee and the lower lands of
Georgia are light and sandy, and pro-
duce a lighter, but still abundant vege-
tation. Lower down on the eastern
slopes of the mountan and in the tide-
water regions are numerous old fields
or abandoned cotton plantations, which
are overrun with scrub pine and native
Images. These level lands provide pas-
ture and offer opportunities for the cul-
tivation of green crops, such as mus-
tard,, rape, turnips, dow-peas, corn, win-
- ter oats, and other local crops, which
will support several sheep to the acre,
during the fall and winter season, or
when the pastures are bare. These
crops are grown very cheaply, and
when fed from the ground, by the sheep
penned in movable hurdles, enrich the
soil very rapidly, and enable it to pro-
duce abundant crops without fertiliz-
ers. eep_ ,
