OR A CATALOGUE.. Bise of th Waters of Lake Tmnip.eg. Greatly to the satisfaction' of all con- Gerned, Lake Winnipeg was frozen over on the night of Monday, 15th November. As little has been published :about the condition of matters in connection with the lake during the past open .sea- son rtow brought to its close, a few items may be interesting. The winter of 1879-80 was severe enough to form an unusual thickness of ice oft tree lake, measuring from 3,}to 5 feet, according to the quantity of snow on the surface. The cutting of holes through this mass, for the pur- posed setting fish nets,, involved a great amount of .labor. Fish. were, however, so abundant as to fully com- pensate for all this toil. This great body of ice broke up on the 15th May, and was entirely gone on the 18th. Heavy rains attended the opening of the lake, and the farming operations, which wei 0 being pushed on at that date with unusual energy and confidence,_ were abruptly checked, and as it soon proved, terminated. For the rain continuedso long that nothing more could be done until near the mid- dle of June. The grain already sown wasdestroyed, and the only hope of any harvest was that . of root crops and beans, which were accordingly largely cultivated. June was unusually cold and backward, bat no fears abotit the root crops were entertained until July gtb, when a killing frost destroyed„ the beans said potatoes generally. As the lake region is eomparat>vely free from `such: frosts, this occurrence caused quite a panic among the settlers, which was increased -by the rising of the water in the lake and an the hay marshes everywhere, hindering the growth of the grass. All prospect of any crobeing thus destroyed, a general ru$e from the colony took place of thos who were able to work out for hire. Fortunately labor was in demand and wages uu- usually high, so that all obtained em- ployment in Manitoba. Haying bears};very later es the grass ,vas short and the hay marshes very wet. The rains made -it almost impos- sible to dry the grass. The water in the marshes became deeper, and the lake continued to rise. Things became much worse iu August and September, and frequent storms inundated the finest hay lands to the depth of 4 feet. Prospects of a flood became alarming. The lands under cultivation became useless in many places. Gardens were destroyed. Fences were carried off by the waves, and the banks of the lake torn up for 40 to 50 feet, being replaced by the sandy beach. A well taw feet from the lake fore water was change which has five years. On the night of the llth September, a very severe gale from the northwest drove the lake over its banks, and de- atroyed fences, stables and dwellings. Several families fled for refuge to other parts of the settlement, and have never returned to their own homes. Every gale from the north after that caused trouble and damage. On the Oth Oc- tober a heavy gale set in, which con- tinued on the 10th. Openings were made through the natural sand bars which formed two fine harbors, and the lake has since then invaded these for- merly safe retreats. followed. A Lomat). of. fine weather But as the lake kept up higher still, there was great danger ,c,f more serious disasters occurring unless the ice should take early. On the 12th of November, ice formed on the lake, and as the tem- perature kept low, it was expected to continue. But on the 24th the barom- eter fell an inch or more, and a fearful storm again visited the place, which was attended with a pheuomena ' so singular as to deserve notice. Com- mencing, on the 14th, the storm raged from the north all night. As the tem- perature was near zero, the ice formed' on the summit of the beard). as every successive wave broke on it, thus form- ing a very perfect barrier on the shore, rising one foot tothree feet higher than the land within. On the 15th the lake because perfectly still, although the wind blew nearly as fiercely as ever. There was no perceptible motion in the water, no swell nor ripple whatever, nor was tie surfacefrozen, although smooth and oily looking. This strange phen- omenou may have arisen from the fine particles of scow or ice with which the water was loaded white at a very low temperature, the mercury being at or below zero. Bat although the gale'diid not -disturb the smooth surface, yet t caused the lake itself to rise higher and higher until, at night it had reached the top of the frozen mass of beach which had kept it back from floc -ding the laud. Then iu a sheet of smooth water it poured quietly over the icy barrier, cov- ering the laud where it was lowest to the depth of three to four feet, filling cellars and flooding stables, driving whole families from their warm houses and t•xl,,,;,ing_them to the gale at six below zero, to wade for - an 110ur through ice and water two to three feet - deep, u.util a place of refuge could be found. The gale continued through the night et the i ith, but not with such violence. Ice formed on the lake, although the wind had not ceased, and a broad sheet of icy: over lake and land marked the tunprecedented height of the waterse when it congealed. So rapidly ice form that a family driven from tlieir honm hy the \vrtters ou the night of the 15th, returne=d by walking ou the, new lake ice 011 the 1(itls. - The water subsided gradually off the land, 'eosin,/ a layer of ice several. incises thick r.itb a, be,ilev; space of one or two feet between it and the •earth, over which it is hardly safe for a man to walk, but quite impossible for horses or cattle. Cetth, indeed, have suffered much during these floods. Their pasturage has been greatly limited in extent as well its tkterioratod irs quality, so that generally they are iu pour condition for wintering. Their hay, very inferior, and much damaged by the floods, massy are e rt<rirs to perielr, auel .others have been already killed as no hay of any de-. scriptiuu could be had for there. In conclusion, it is quite evident that had it uttt been for the unusually low temperature at the time of the last gale, which. kept the water from being rolled in upou the land as usual, and which rapidly congealed it before the gale had cea- cd, c,, cry serious calamity would have occurred. As it is, no one can feel surprised that a general removal to a safer locality in the Northwest is contemplated. A feeling of greater security is now enjoyed. since the lake is frozen up. A. question is often asked by those who have suffered by the floods of the last season, "If it is so bad now, ed t gt g t 0, or as o ud t . ke nage O it bT nnipe s firs g efor dr. at the lake e gale,' of an Ift. o S three un unk 301 feet Stich is i place her ter ;'suet e 'he a er Va The - sale of Beaconsfield's ne pectations.
