THE LITERARY SOOIETY.—The next
meeting of the Literary Society will be
held on Tuesday evening next, at the
usual hour. The following gentlemen
have kindly consented to give readings
on the occasion : Reeds.' Messrs. Hill,
Cobb and McCoy, and Messrs. James
Watson, W. jBurnett, Harriston and J.
A. Wilson. IA good programme may
be expected, and we hope to see a large
attendance.
GOOD PIGS.—Mr. Sohn Kerre of the
7th concession of Mogi llop,. sold this
week to Mr. Frank Case two pigs whioh
weighed when. dressed 824 pounds.
They were sold for 6 cents per pound,
thus netting, the handsome sum of
$49.44, These pigs were 16 months
old and were raised and fed by Mr.
Kerr himself, and were generally ad-
mitted by those who Elam them to be
the finestpork that has been sold in
this market -this season. Thin is the
kind of pork that it is profitable to
raise.
ANNIVERSARY SERVICE$.—As we inti-
mated last week, the anniversary ser-
vices in connection with the Presby-
terian Church will be held on Sunday
next, when. Rev. J. Smith, of Guelph,
will preach both morning and evening,,
and on the following evening the anni-
versary tea meeting will be held, when
addresses will be delivered by Rev. Mr.
Smith and local clergymen. The
church choir, under the leadership of
Professor Jones, will give a number: of
musical selections. We expect a real
pleasant evening, and we hope to see a
large attendance both on Sunday and
on Monday evening. .
A FIFE BIRD. -We were shown a
few days ago a magnificent large grey
owl, which had been captured by Mas-
ter John Chesney,, a young lad 11 years
of age, grandson of Mr. James Chesney,
of the 4th concession of Tuckersmith.
This king of birds had been caught in a
,pink trap in Mr. Chesney's barnyard.
It measures 5 feet 2 inches from tip to
tip of its wings. It had for a consider-
able time been robbing Mr. Chesney's
_ ben roosts and had killed about 20
rabbits. It is a beautiful specimen, and
Master Chesney may well feel proud of I
kis capture. He will likely be able to
restrain it froma its thieving propensi-
tiea in the future and make it as wise
and honestas its appearance would in-
dicate it to be.

LITERARY ENTERTAINMENT. — The
seooad of the series of literary enter-
tainments by the Mutual Improvement
Society in connection with the Metho-
diet Church was given on Monday
evening last. The attendance was
fairly large and a most interesting pro-
gramme was well carried out. Read-
ings were given by Misses Ritchie,
Rogers and Vercoe, and by Messrs. H.
Smith, L. Harstone, C, Clarkson and J.
Smith. Well executed piano solos
were rendered by Misses Mabee and
Houghton, while Misses Patterson and
Shaw and Messrs. Offord and W. Hill
each gave a vocal solo° and Miss Hill
and Mr. A. Hill sang a duet very nicely.
The entertainment, upon the whole was
good and was highly appreciated by the
audience.
Goon FOR Ca' RIT.—A few days ago Mr.
George Whiteley received a communica-
tion from Mr. A. H. Dymond, Secretary
of the Ontario Agricultural Commission,
asking him if he would permit a photo
graph to be taken of - his celebrate
blood stallion, "Clear Grit." In the
evidence taken by the Commission, fre
queut reference was made by witnesses
to the excellence of the stock of thi
horse, and the Commission have.. con
sequently resolved to have a true repro
sentation of him appear in their print°•
report. Mr. Whiteley of course gav.
Ms consent, and the symmetrical form o
old "Clear Grit," or a true representa
