HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1880-12-10, Page 6American Boy at Boar School in France. wHere I am at the end of the li rst eek of school, and I must say tha it s the longest week that ever I pas: ed. It is awful not to know what people are saying when they speak to you, an • to be able only to stand and grin in an- swer.. That is about all I could do his week, though it is straightening os t a :little and is less of a jabbering tha at first. I keep trying to talk with the boys1 and I do -understand a very h tie, and 1.1 I catch a word here and the e I iguess the rest, and, as I always • as good at guessing, I get along aft r a fashion: But everything is hard at. s rst, ;and hardest of all is the dormitory ith ':forty boys in one room ; beds only wo feet apart, and a French boy on :etch !side of me. There is nothing by y,nr- self here ;: you eat, sleep, wash, st • dy, Iplay always with a lot of boys and a ter me an • 11 g ;master. Even when I got your le four or five boys looked on to see ;read it; all the more so as it was ' Englise." . Next hardest to the dormitory is the breakfast ; a soup plate of coffee or chocolate with a hunch of bread as big las your fists—nothing else. It is ra to er tough for me. These boys are so ::d to it that they don't see anything fu , ny lin asking me, " Have you hada g sod breakfast r' after it. Shouldn't I ike to set them down to beeksteak _(re) znd stewed potatoes, and waffles ••ith maple syrup ! If a boy outside di n't bring me a sandwich, which I eat at the little recess after breakfast, I should be hungry. It is forbidden to bring m at, go he smuggles•it in to me and I holii it tip the sleeve of my jacket and eat it,on the sly. But I just long -for an Amari - an beefsteak, rich and rare ! Our ; 'n- ners are better than our breakfasts, al- though now it is Lent, and so we h ve fish three or four times a week. I d n't see how eating fish makes a pers S. soul better. It don't mine. I she ld. feel more Iike a Christian after a god eefsteak. than a whole cart loa of fishes.. ' I wonder if the picture in your m nd is at all like the reality. You just th ilk € f me on a dark winter's morning t ta- bling out of bed at 5:30 ; ten minutes for dressing ; scramble into your clothes; When; your turn comes, rush to the wash room, wash in cold water ; bac to your place; march to the study -room, and so on. I don't think much of French s0 @ col justice. They give all sorts of penal res for nothing. Theresa the retenue gra: de, Which keeps you in when the others go out for holiday. Then the retenue- s'm- *le; it takes eight simples to make 'ne ande. Then piquet, which is o.ly lking around a certain figure in he yard at recess. I've had so mnchpi test Wearly I'm getting up is walkieg. hen I come home I shall be read ,- to take the belt in a walking match. 1'• ut the retenues make me mad. The of • er day a boy pushed my pile of books •ut df my hands when I was in the ra • .8, and I had Ito pick them up. I s id, 'I Yon do that a second time if you d e." Then the teacher yelled, M. Guill- eume, retenue." `•' But, tionsieur, ' I said, " some one tumbled down y books." " Rete>tuce grande," he yel ed' again; To -day, in class, a teacher c ll - ed, Hands an the desks." I obs d, and he repeated the order and Tooke at tie. I thought he could not see y hands, so I said, " Yes, Monsieur, y bands are in place." " Retentcegran e," he yelled, and was furious. After ci s. a boy told me never to respond to ny order or punishment, . whether jest or not. That is the way here. They have a very low opinion of b ys here, anyhow. One master said the other day, " For me, every boy ire a /Jar !" Now, that shows narrow -mi d- e1nese, does it not ? I don't think t at Man ought to have anything to do w th. boys, and I'll bet he was a liar him elf then he was a boy, and that is why he he has such a bad opinion of them. ` I must confess that French boys are m ch more liars than Americans. An Am ri- ean boy will come up to the scratch nd oat with the truth, but these fellows re cowards. Of course I don't mean t ey die all so. They, are different, of course, a all boys are ; some nice and kind„ aid some mean fellows, but they do any of themtell the truth as scfuere boys at home. It isall very well, what you say ab ut keeping a fair and open mind, and of being prejudiced, and not blaming of er yd'for thinking so much of their o n country when I think the United Sta es is the best on this earth. But 1 leav it t you, slid I ever go blowing about Iiny c entry when I saw a foreigner ? I as aways sorry fat him when I me Fenoh or an English boy in Boston New York. But these boys blow 1't as Or. o! I'never liked the English ranch befolje ; hat now I stand up for them. They s jeak the.English language, and that's something ; and they don't lie. o- dy a boy said to me that the French always whipped in war, and that t ey beat the English every time. He had been blowing against the English a d the Americans, and I couldn't et French enough to answer back ; ut when it came. to that I put up b th hands like a trumpet, and I whispe ed through it as loud as I could, " Wee n- t4o,! I never saw a boy so mad. He tttrned red in the face and shook his I; st at me, and just' then M. 1lltandil, he tdacher, shouted, " M. Guillaume, pip tett one quart heure." (That means o re - quarter of an hour's piquet at rete: s.) I didn't care for that. I'd got even w th that boy bragging about French :.1. - diem. Women as Copyists. The sereices of women as copyists • rd reporters are more welcome and m ere frequent in law -offices in New Y rk than ever before. Ten years ago no • o man reporter was seen in a room wh re a referee was trying a case; to -day he sight is a common one. A well known lawyer said that as type writers women .. were far superior to men, they can kat more out of a machine, and get it in bet- , ter shape than men; and that as ste o - g aphic reporters of law cases: they re fully the equals of men in accuracy, le- gibility and trust worthiness. Anot er well known lawyer mentioned two ca es i4 which women copyists had recently given great satisfaction to his firm, al- though he considered such work very trying to the nerves of anybody, and e- mending much physioal endurance. e hs.d noticed that English scriveners w :6 had Colne to this city were often v ry intemperate. Mr. Dudley Leathley',n English lawyer, says that for more than four years his law -copying has been done ley a woman, " and I can say witho t hesitation that the work executed is, .s a rule, infinite' s' per accuracy and l:: oil twentieths of th Ork law stationer w Teaching d 'i dr Every child in the enough to use is iha telligently should ha useful occupation ! the country boys :•nd relieving their ov rw not only an assist hold, but a means ig important that unfortunately like find for their el take the place of t tion.
