Close Breeding.
There is too much prejudice agai st
olose breeding. This is the chief point
in improving stock, and by no means
endangers the constitution unless car-
ried to great excess. If the progeny', of
a good bull is au improvement upon the
dams, the improvement will be
continued by a second and even a third.
cross of the same bull. When the full
effect of the new bloodhas been pro-
ducedthen a change may be made, hat
the change may, and, does -very often,
set everything back again, unless great
caution -is exercised. To breed' a
Jere to his progeny is not so close
breeding as to use sire and dam of the
same blood, so that if one has a bull
that proves to be valuable, it is wise to
retain him itt the herd for same years,
and so produceeveness of character tnd
quality. This is one of the fundame tal
principles of the successful practice of
breeding. There is a vast scope for ithe
careful improvement of our dairy stock
in the hands of dairymen themselyes,
and it can only be made in, this yay.
So says the Agricultural editor of the
New York Times.
