housekeeper, .who honestly intend that
her work shall be. done faithfully -and
systematically, with an eye to the com-
fort and happiness of every inmate- of
the family, will findthe necessity for -
some portion of the bodily exercise she
needs and cannot have so advantageous-
ly in any other effort. Does thislmean
anything like drudgery? Not a - all.
A party, a shopping or sight-seei g- ex-:

builds up the mental condition, 811 arges
and streagthensit, so that there will be
lesscraving for the continual_ excite-
ment of a worldly life, and more pleas-
ure in pursuits. that build up and
ennoble the mind and verify the heart.
About Hen -Houses.
Looking into the apartments allotted
to poultry on many farms, one would
conclude that the farmers considered
fowls as having no rights which they
were bound to respect. The hens are
too frequently allowed to remit in some
open shed, on the wagons - and other
farm implements, which they besmear
disgustingly, and the whole arrange-
ment looks slovenly and uncomfort-
able. The impression with these far -
mere seems to be that the hen is akl un-
clean animal, and can put with unelean
quarters. This is a great mistake.' Be-
cause they wallow and flounder ilk the
dirt, some conclude that they have a pro-
clivity for the unclean, but it should be
noticed that they select dry, clean soil
for floundering, and when they arise and
shake themselves, the dirt does; not
stick to them any more than Water
does to a duck. Let the hibernating
quarters of the hens, therefore, be made
as neat and inviting as possible, the
fitting abode _ of a 'most tidy and beau-
tiful animal. Hens prefer to sleep on
trees in the- slimmer, because the trees
are so well ventilated, and it should be
the farmer's care to see that when they
retire
retire into their winter quarters they
are not suffocated for the want of I air,
nor poisoned with that which is foul.
In order to induce a• good circulation of
air in . the hennery, we always keep
open the little passage through which
the hens enter, no matter hovv could it
is, and one or more windows dropped
from the top except in extreme cold
nights. In this mild autumn weather
it is better that the upper sash should
be dropped, its full length, for hens cen.
-withstand cold weather mu -ch better
than they can foul air. It is estimated
that each, hen wants a hundred cubic
feet of air for healthy breathing. This
would require a hennery for 20 liens to'
be 20 feet long, 10 wide and 10 high,
but it may be made smaller if properly
ventilated.
Accidents in the House.
-In the household occasional accidents
occur, generally of a harmless character,
but as they are sometimes of a certain
gravity, we- refer e few hints which
are useful :
It is the most stupid of drug clerks
that confounds oxalic acid with epsom
salts. In case by any accideat oxalic
acid has been taken, the antidote fpr it
is lime. The chemical reason for using
lime is that the oxalic acid forms with
it an insolable _ compound, and its Cor-
rosive action on the coating of the
stomach is at once stopped. "li lime -
water is at hand,it may be given freely,or
whitewash, tooth -powder, (its base is
always chalk), chalk, whiting, or plaster
frora the wall.. The latter may be
crushed and stirred up in water with-
out regard to grittiness, which will not
do any harm."
For sanitary purposes carbolic acid is
now frequently found in houses. The
mica' of its accidental use mast be of
rare occurrence, as its peculiar strong
odor makes it recognizable at once.
Still, cases of its having been taken in
the dark are not uncommon. It -is a
most dangerous poison, because, as Dr.
Dulles states, it beams after the first
painful corrosive effects " to benumb
the stomach." At once large and re-
peated doses of oil or rciilk should be
given. Certain cases of poisoning with
carbolic acid have been successfully
treated, after oil had been taken, by
stimulation. But it is a dangerous
acid, and care should be taken with the
bottle containing it..
Mistakes as to quantity of opiurn
preparationare by no means uncoma
mon accidents. Such are to be found,
most unfortunately, iu what Dr. Dulles
very properly calls "the many poisonous
nostrums sold as soothing syrups, pain
destroyers,and drops for infants." There
is no expression harsh enough which
would. serve to brand the woman who
administers such poison Ito her babv.
A mother who gives such -Stebstances to
her child without a doctor's advice
takes the chances of life or death in her
own hands. To such, capable of seeing
their children waste away before their
eyes, no advice would be of avail. We
address, then, those who, unfortunately
may give laudanum or black drop for ,
paregoric. " The symptoms are deep
sleep, witli narrowing cf the pupil of
the eye to a small circle, which does not
enlarge in the dark." Dr. Dulles ad- 1
vises the immediate and persistent use
of emeticSe and to allow the patient to
vomit over and over again." Particu-
lar attention should be paid to breath-
nag. "So long as the breathing does s
not fall below ten to the minute there is
no immediate danger of death; but
opium is a dangerous poison, and re-
quires all the skill that caaibe obtained t
to combat it." Formerly the custom
was to walk a patient up and down, cl
and to slap with wet towels, "What to y
Do First" deprecates this, for the rea- t
son that it exhausts the patient, who, s
if very ill, cannot rally. Xf physical b
stimulant is to be mode lay the patient g
