Test for Teachers.
The following rather curious piece of
composition was recently placed upon
the blackboard at a teachers' institute
in -Vermont and a prize of .a Webster
dictionary offered. to any person who
could read it and pronounce every word
correctly. The book was not carried
off, however, as twelve was the lowest
number of mistakes in pronunciation
made : " A. sacrilegious son of Belial,
who suffered from bronohitis, having
exhausted his fivances, in order to make
good the deficit, resolved to ally him-
self to a comely, lenient and docile
young lady of the Malay or Caucasian
race. He accordingly purchased a cal-
liope and coral necklace of a chameleon
hue, and securing a suite of rooms at
the principal hotel, he engaged the head
waiter as his coadjutor. He then des-
patched a letter of the most unexcep-
tional caligraphy extant, inviting the
young lady to a matinee. She revolted
at the idea.. refused to consider herself
sacrificable to his desires, and sent a
polite note of refusali on receiving which
he procured a carbine and a bowie
knife, said that he.would not now forego
letters hymenial with the queen, went
to an isolated spot, severed his jugular
vein and discharged the contents of his
carbine into his abdomen. The debris
were removed by the coroner. The
mistakes in pronun aiation were made
on the, following words: Sacrilegious,
13elial, bronchitis, exhausted, finances,
deficit, COMaly, lenient, docile,. Malay,
calliope, chameleon, suite, coadjutor,
caligrophy, matinee, sacrifica.ble, car-
bine, hyinenial, isolated, jugular and
debris.
A Lesson in Making Out a
Speaking of sextons reminds us of a
story which one of the old members of
the craft used te tell. He had a funer-
al to conduct for the family of Mr. M.,
a wealthy but eccentric merchant.
When it was over he handed in his bill,
made out according to his usual cus-
tom. Mr. M. put on his eye glasses,
opened the bill and read. it carefully
through. "I see you have a charge of
536 for kid gloves here," said he, "how
many pair did you buy ?" "A. dozen,"
was the answer. "And here, again, you
have $50 charged for the scarfs worn in
the procession. How mauv scarfs were
there, and what did they cost ?" "I
bad to have a dozen—two of them new
and the rest cleaned and made over.
Their entire cost was about $35." "And
you have put down carriage hire at
550. How many carriages had you?".
“Eight in all." “And they cost you
how much apieee?'"Four dolrars."
"Very well, sir, I decline to pay your
bill." The sexton was thunderstruck;
Mr. M. had never been known to dis-
pute a reasonable account with any one
before, and he was reputed very rich.
could have gone to a store and
bought all those gloves for $2 a pair
myself," the millionaire went on, "or
$21 for the lot. I could have hired ten
scarfs and had the others made for $35.
I could have got the carriages from any
livery stable for 5,32. Twenty-four and
32 are 56, and 35 make 91. You have
charged me $136 for articles which I
could ln„ve procured for $02 myself. I
presume there are other items of the
same sort elsewhere in the account."
"But, Mr. "I decline to pay
the bill, sir. Take it back and make it
out again right.''But, Mr. M., I
must make something on these affairs ;
that is the only means I have of gain-
ing a livelihood." "Make your bill out
as it should be, I say." "But, sir, you
won't find that 'any other undertaker
in the city would have served you bet-
ter." "Perhaps not ; and more's the
pity. Still, I decline to pay your bill.
in, its present shape." Sadly crestfallen,
the sexton was about to turn away,
when the merchant pointed to a seat at
his writing table. "Sit down there,"
said he, "and I will teach you how to
make out a bill. First, enter the hearse,
coffin, advertisements, etc., as you have`
them. Then write : 'To one dozen pair
Mack kid gloves, at $2, 24;5to making
