Bc RGLARY —On Tuesday night last
the ]harness shop of Mr. John Ward of
this town was broken into and three
large valises, and harness hardware
and trimmings and other articles to the
value of about $150 or $200 carried off.
Entrance to the shop was gained
through a back window. The thieves
ransacked all the drawers in the place,
took with them the most valuable ar-
ticles and left behind them anything
common. The " hardware they took •
from the small: paste -board boxes in
which they were packed and left the
boxes lying oil the floor. The perpe-
trators were, evidently well acquainted
with the harness business, else they
could not have distinguished so nicely
between common articles and articles
of value. There is no direct suspicion t

PROMPT SETTLEMENT.—A. card from
Mr. James Mann, of Hullett, appears
in this issue, in which he thanks the
officers of the McKillop Insurance f
Company for the prompt and aatis-
factory manner in which they have a
settled his claim. for loss sustained
by the burning of his barn and contents
in August last. We may also state that a
not quite two months have;elapsed since a
cl s
the fire occurred, and. on Saturday last
Mr., Mann received the amount of his
claim iu full from Mr. Shannon, the
Treasurer. At the time of the fire there h
was not a cent in the treasury,, and the i
whole amount, over $600, has been as- n
sessed and collected from the several
members since then. This is certainly
prompt work, and so long as . the
officers of the -company continue to
transact business in this way, there is
no danger of the company's progress.
In addition to this amount, over $900
has also been collected, and is now in
the bank awaiting further claims. Mr..
Shannon wishes us to express to; the
members of the company, his thanks
for tine prompt manner iu which so
many responded to the last call and
paid up their assessments. He would
also be extremely obliged to the few
who have not yet paid up their assess -
d particularly erito 'ous.

THE VIRTUES bF FLAT ROOFS.—Whent
a man has a flat roof on his house his
repairing of the roof to keep things dry'
inside, comes aleng with startling reg4

there ia no getting away from it. So
thinks J. R. Saaders of this town and
several others. The man who will

SHEEP AND DOGS.—Qtrite a number
of farmers have ad sheep destroyed by
dogs. Notioeab amongst the number
is Mr. Wm. Br an, who lost no fewer
than nine hi on night. There re a
lot of worthless urs kept in the country
that would be a reat deal the better of
a dose of blickshot, and ahother thing
that has a great deal to ao with the
matter is, that 1 ts of dogs aae kept
where there' is carcely eaough to eat
for the family. Well, the dogs must
eat something, and so the tarmers'
sheep must go.
