The oCool Hens.
Written or the Expositor.
The McCools have been keeping hens
for some time.. Mrs. McCool thought
it would be nic to have fresh eggs all
the time. The, had. plenty of good ac-
commodation, nd Mrs. McCool started
a small henner3. Since then, in 'spite
of all drawbac s, the McCools have
stuck to the h ns with laudable per•i-
sistence. Som times they have eggs,
sometimes they don't: For a while the
McCool dog see ed to crave eggs. He
appeared to thi k they were peculiarly
adapted to the tate of his system and
that the hens N -ere kept solely for his
accommodation and amusement. When
things were dui and he wanted a little
diVereion, ther were the heus to chase
and worry. W en he wanted some-
thing to eat, th re would. likely be an
egg or two in t e hen house, and he
liked to suck e gs. In the course of
tiro, however he ' was educated to
leave bens and hen fruit alone. One
amusement w s left him -the solace
of his lonely h rs. . Rif; plate of por-
ridge and milk meemedto possess a pe -
what charm f r the hens. Repeated
failure did not appear to discourage
therein their e orts to 'sample it. The
more they c uldn't the more they
would, and Fi o derived an intense
satisfaction in tantalizing them. He
would go witho t his breakfast half a
day and lie nea it pretending to sleep,
till some unlu.c y hem would venture a
peck at it, and hen -look out, hen !
Then there as the next door neigh-
bor. Althoug it was only on the
rarest occasio s thIat a McCool hen
would stray -int her yarcl, she complain-
ed that her see beds were not a proper
lace for McC ol hens to disport them-
selves, and ; 'though nearly every
neighbor arose d kept hens -badly be-
haved hens without a trace of refine-
ment in them she visited the iniquities
of all on the M Cool hens. There were
other dra, wbac s, bpt the McCools are a
patient race.
One evenin Mr: McCool went out
about 7 &doe' . As he looked about,his
observant eye oon discovered that the
hens were roos ing in the trees. This
was repugnant to his high sense of ;de -
comm. He as ready to &draft that
they were nice looking hens, but still
that was no re son why they should
camp out in ti e front yard. Camping
out, to be sure was all the fashion, but
Mr. McCool ecnsidered that his: hens
should rise su erior to the demands - of
fashion -The McCool • hens, like the
IfeCocde the selves, were strongly in-
clined to folio their own sweet will,
and their awes will •on this occasion
was to roost in the plaini trees, and to a
hen they_ were, icalraly resolved to roost
in the plum rees. Mr. McCoors de-
liberations led him to the determina-
tion that they hould: not roost in the
plane trees, bu in the proper place pre-
pared by him or their nocturnal ac-
commodation. It had been one of
our hottest su mer days and it still
looked like a t aw, but he was, willing
to exert hinase f slightly to accomplish
this end. He ppeeled to the McCool
family to he p him. 11 rs. and. Miss
McCoo1 were serenely indifferent.
Young Mr. M Cool calmly xemarked
that he didn t give a continental
whether the h ns roosted on the -trees
or the trees ro sted on the hens. Mr.
McCool said h veduld do it his own
self. He caul drive hens -drove 'em
when a boy: onld just like to see the
hens he could 't drive • he understood
hen, nature e actly, Mrs. McCdol re-
commended hi to let the hens alone
and not make n old fool of himself, but
he armed him elf WIith a long pole and.
went about p king the hens off the
trees and tryin to drive them into the
ben house. S rangely enough, the hens
wouldn't go w erel
. e wanted them. In
ie
fact they woul go everywhere -every-
where under tl e sun -but through one
particular door. When Mr. McCool
had poked a h n off a tree it would
loeke a bee line . for the raspberry
bushes. Wh n he had almost ex-
