Snow Roads andi Wire Fences.
MB. EDITOR—DRAB SIR Winter fist
coming, and if we have heavy snow
Vis, we will again be annoyed with
blocked roads, and consequently - there
will be very much grumbling against
board and rail fences ; and that is all it
ever amounts to.
But sir, instead of grumbling at our
misfortunes in the snowy winter, and
then as soon as spring comes, lapping
. back into contentment until our troubles
return, I think we,should endeavor to
have a permanent cure effected, by the
erection of wire fences along our high-
ways, instead of those -of board or rails.
But this of course raises the question,
bow are farmers to be induced to adopt
the wire ? Well, I will give . you my
lar, which I arm encouraged to do,
the fact that I find some others
have hit upon the same idea. It is
this, secure an Act of Parliament grant-
ing to every one who erects a wire fence
along the highway, the use of five or
six. feet of said highway, This would
be ample compensation for any ad-
ditional expense, and might also induce
many to plant trees to fasten the wire
to, which would certainly be a great
ornament to the country.
We eannot see any objection to the
above plan, as the only object in having
the road allowance so wide as it is now,
is to prevent that which Lit fails to do,
and which the above plan certainly
would, viz : the blocking of the roads in
winter. Hoping to hear from some of
my brother farmers on the above sub-
ject, I remain yours, HURON
Vsborne, Sept. 21, 1880.
Huron Notes.
Last week Mr. _ John Porter, of
Goderich township,e!eptured a coon
weighing 17 pounds.
—George Hepinstall, of Fordwich,
has a heifer 18 months -aid which gave
birth to a fine calf on the 8th inst., and
is doing well.
—Mr. Hawley, of Goderich, was last
week awarded the first prize at the De-
troit show, for his celebrated Durham
bull "Beaconsfield."
—The Wiugham waterworks are
about completed, and the inhabitants
are considering the propriety of having
a grand opening celebration.
—A heifer belonging to Mr. George
Godlbolt, of the 10th concession of
Usborne. had its back broken while
pasturing in a field one night last week.
—Mr. W. H. McCracken, of Brus-
sels, offers eight special prizes in the
vegetable line for the Grey Branch
show, to be held in. Brussels, October
fith and 8th.
—Dr. Carter, of Ethel, soldhis farm
of fifty acres, on the 10th concession of
Grey,. to Mr. Samuel Chambers, for the
sum of 82,100. The Doctor takes
Mr. Chambers' house and lot in Ethel
at $900.
—The temperance people, of Bayfield
are endeavoring to form a union tem-
perance association in that place. The
ministers are taking an active interest
in the movement, and we hope a strong
association will be formed.
--Wm. !Johnston alias Philip Fore -
still, has been sentenced to six weeks
imprisonment for attempting to break
out of Goderich jail. He should have
been sent to the Central .Prison,
where he would have to work for his
grub. ,
—Mr. Thomas McFarlane, of the 2ndl
concession of Grey, recently had stray-
ed from his farm a flock of nine sheep.
He would be grateful to any knowing of
their whereabouts, if they would leave
the information at Jamestown -Post
Office. •
—While Mr. N. Deichert, of Zurich,
was driving down Main street in Ex-
eter, a few days ago, and when opposite
Messrs. 0. & S; Gidley's, his horse took
fright at Some fat cattle and jumped
into the ditch, throwing Mr. Deichert
out on-hiS head. He was not seriously
injured.
—The semi-annual meeting of the
West Huron Teachers' Association, will
be held in the High School, Goderich,
on Friday and Saturday, October 8th
and 9th, commencing each day at 9
o'clock a. m. An excellent programme
has been prepared, and Mr. G-, W.
Boss, M. P., will take part in the pro-
ceedings. -
—The autumn hearing of the Court
of Chancery for this county, commenced
at Goderich on Tuesday of last week,
before His Lordship Vice -Chancellor
Blake, and only lasted for half an hour.
The onlycase on the docket was a'
suit of Robertson vs. May, to set aside
a fraudulent conveyance, made by de-
fendant. _ Decree made in favor of
plaintiff, With the usual reference to
Master.
—The cattle fair in Wingham, last
week, was well attended by buyers, and
a large number of cattle changed hands
at good prices, those who sold being
perfectly satisfied that they made
money by bringing their cattle to Wing -
ham. The monthly fair is now an es-
tablished fact, and the buyers express
their intention of being on hand regu-
larly. The next one will be held on the
20th October.
--Messrs. Curtis and Seeger, the
British farm delegates, accompanied by
A. G. Smyth, Esq., Dominion Immi-
