AMUSING EXPERIENCES IN .i SCOTCH
SCHOOL BOARD.
CHAPTRR 1.
Everybody in Whinyknoves knew
'Sandy Jamieson. WitinyknOwes was
described hi the gazetteer as "a small
village in East Lothian." The Whiny
knowites had a notion that it was not a
small tillage. But the gazetteer was
rig,ht, and Sandy Jamieson might have
been more widely kuown had the place
been larger'. Sandy Jamiesoa was vari-
ously estimated. By his neighbors in
general he was accounted a • canny,
donee kind of a man,, ofa pawkie turn
of mind, and with strongly marked
economic tendencies. The laird, who
had been the previous occupant of
Sandy's shop;- regarded him as "a de.
cent sort of a creature in a small way of
business."
Sandy described himself, in large
capitals over his shop front, as "Post-
master and General Merehant; ' and to
his intimate friends and acquaintances
he recounted several other social quali-
flcations, past; presentand prospective,
that had, did, and would distinguish
him. He was looked upon as a weel-
to-do man, and his Biller had been
amassed in that negative way so dear
to many of his countrymen. He could
not be said to have made it; but the
bawbees, had timbled in of themselves,
as it were, aae¬ one had Peen spent
that could -possibly be saved. He
possessed another national virtue—she
had an excellent opinion of himself, and
his wife had been more or leas coerced
into the same way of thinking.
The story opens with a conversation
between the two.
"There's gaup to be a Schule Board
in our parish, Elsie," observed the post
master, as he knocked the ashes out of
a long clay pipe which he had been
smoking for the last ten minutes, in
silent contemplation of the social revo-
lution hiswords portended.
"A Schule Board ?" inquired his
better half, looking over her spectacles
at him;, "what i' the world's that.,
• gudernan ?"
"On, d'ye no ken what a Schule
Board is 2" rejoined Sandy, answering
one question with another—a practice
not uncommon in the "Land o' Cakes."
"Is't a black: board for the Moister to
chalk on 2"
"Chalk — fiddlesticks 1" interrupted
Sandy, with a gesture of contempt.
"Weel, is't a board by the roadside
tellin' folk the way td the schule 7"
"Gae awa with your haivers, woman
—a Schule Board is a lot of men.
"How do they call them a Board,.
then ?" demanded Elsie, rather net-
tled.
"'Deed, that's what I canna mak out
myself."
Sandy slowly refilled his pipe, while
he tried anew to solve the problem.
"'ye think, Sandy," suggested Elsie
deferentially --and to show still further
that it was only a surmise she presum-
ed to indulge in, she changed from the
present tense with which her question
commenced, and continued in the fu-
ture—" Wul.l't be,d'ye think,that they've
thick wooden heids, and so they ca'
them boards, just like the maister
called us blockheads ?"
"Weel, I niver !" exclaimed Sandy,
losing all patience. "Woman, the
Belittle Board will be the best men • in
the pairish."
"0 -oh 1" rejoined Elsie, with a pro-
longed intonation, meant to be 'severely
sarcastic, "and are you to be a Board,
Sandy ?"
"So they tell me.
"And what's to be done wi' ye when
they've gotten ye ?" asked Else rather
snappishly.
"Done wi' the Board ?"
, ye ding a' withyour ignorance.
Done wi' the Board ? Naething's to be
donee -with them it's only them that's
to do things."
"Eh me !. oh, ay ! and what are they
gaup to do, if it be fair to speir ? Are
they gams back to the fair.
again ?"
"Woman, will -ye ever learn sense ?
How conld auld men gang to the
schule again ?"
"What will they do then .?'" persisted
Elsie.
"Do. ? They're gaun ,to mak grand
speeches about eddieatio-n, and have
meetin's every fortnight.;"
"And sit round a big table, I deur
say," said Elsie, pursuing the descrip-
tion, "like.lawyerss in the oourt."
"Ay, just that."
"That's the way," exclaimed Elsie;
with a sudden inspiration, "that'sthe
way they call it a Schule Board, then. 1"
"What way ?"
"Because they all sit round a board.
But it would have been mair genteel' to
have called it a Schule Table."
"Weal, maybe ye're,richt," said
Sandy, cousidering. "1 mann think
that owre."
"But what need they :fash about eddi-
cation, Sandy ; "isna there twa schules
in the pairish already 2"
"Now ye're speakin' sense. Ay,
there's twa schules in the pairish, and.
they bate one another like pisen. One's
better off than the other, ye see, and
what's more, they're denominaw-
tional, so we are gaup to mak them
equal."
"That seems fair eneuch, Sandy ; but
wall they agree till't, think ye 2"
"Agree till't ?" Od,, they mann agree
till't. The Board'lI have meetin's and.
gar them agree till't,"
"And how many wall be at your
meetin's, gudeman ?"- i
"I understand there's to be seven o'
us, and we mann be all men o' poseesh-
nu. So there'sto be John Black o' the
Lowes, Tammas Saunders o' Myreside,
Stevens o' Deukdub, Tarrson o' Glen -
shoe Rab Nisbet o' the Glen, Geordie
Anderson o' Mucklehoise, and mysel'."
"But ye've forgotten the -minister,
Sandy."
"We're ga.un to have no ministers.
They've gotten their noses in owre many'
things already."
"But ministers ken mair about a'
thing than ither folk."
"They used to do, but that's no the
case now."
"Aye, but Sandy, yell no have a
