Other Fellows Think So, Too.
There's just : ne thing a man can have
In allthis world of woe and strife,
That makes the business not too bad,
And that one thing's art easy- wife.
Dost fancy that I love my girl -
For rosy cheeks pr raven hair ?
She holds my heart became she laughs—
Because she laughs and doesn't care.
I put my boots just where it snits, +
And find them where I put them, too ;
That is a thing, you must allow,
A chap can very seldom do.
I leave my papers on my desk ;
She never dusts them in cheap,
Or takes to light the kitchen stove'
The eery one I want to keep.
• I .
On winter nights my cosy dame
Will warm her toes before tin fire ;
She never scolds about the lamp,
Or wants the wick a trifle higher .
On Sundays she is not so fine
But what her ruffles I can hug;
I light my pipe jest where I please,
And spill the ashes on the rug:
The bed is never filled with "shams"—
A thing some weaken vilely plan
To worry servants half to death,.
And spoil the temper_ of -a man. .
Slle lots rue slt•ei, to any hew,
I`o? rai,es any horrid din.
If it just happ,,ns now and then
To be quite late when I come in.
I tell you, Jack, if you would wed,
Just get a girl who let's things ran,
- She'll keep her temper like a lamb,
And help you on to lots of fun.
Don't look for money, style or show,
Or blushing beauty, ripe and mre ;
Just take the one who laughs at fate—
Who laughs, and shows she doesn't care.
Yon think, perhaps, our household ways
Are just perchance a little mixed;
Oh, when they got too horrid bad,
We stir about and get things fixed.
What compensation has a. man
Who earns his bread by sweat of brow,
If home is made a battle ground,
And fife one long eternal row ?_
—Harpers' Magazine for September.
Babies Learning to Swim.
When the first missionaries from
this country went to South Africa in
1:835, they found the people and all
their customs very different from what
they had left in America, six thousand
miles away across the, ocean. The na-
tives, with their shiny black skins, wore
almost no clothing—living in mud huts
shaped like great- haystacks, and did
many things that surprised the white
people very much.
Just imagine a little Zulu baby not
old enough to walk, whose mother puts
it down on the sandy bank of the river
while she fills her water jar. The mis-
sionary lady comes along and tries by
signs to say good morning, and how do
you do ? The Zulu mother examines
the dress of the "pale lady," and tries
t -o ask for some clothes for herself, all
forgetfulof her baby, who creeps to the
water's edge, and as the white lady
springs forwardwith a frightened cry
to catch him, off goes baby, paddling
through the water like a little duck.
Zulu mother laughs, for she knows
that he won't dros.,n. How he -does en-
joy it : and well he may, for baby goes
in swimming almost everyday. -

Ile. took the first lesson when, a few. his p
weeks old, his mother took him to the ` flock,
river, and tying one end of a long piece pastu
of native cloth round his little body night.
just under the arms, and holding the , the
other end in one hand, she dropped civil
baby in the water.. Of course he cried,
or tried to, then, taught by the instinct
given him- by the good God who made
him, he began to move his arms and
Iegs very fast. Mother, holding her
end of the strip of cloth, kept him from
sinking, and soon took him out, for the
first lesson must be a short one. After
a few days the bath and swim were as
much enjoyed as any of your baby
brothers or sisters enjoy splashing about
in the tub in the nursery. Then the
mother tried taking off the cloth, and
baby paddled off alone, with mother
watching him, of course. Thin is why
Zulu babies learn to swim before they
know how to walk. -
Mail Time at the Village Post
Office.
Half an hour before the arrival of the
daily mail they began to come in—the
merchant who expects a letter—the
blacksmith who thinks he may possi-
bly get One, the carpenter who hasn't
had one for a year, but who still- live
in hopes, the laborer who hasn.'t the
slightest idea that he will ever get any-
,,thing more interesting than a circular
advising him to insure his life before
it is too late, the farmer who has friends
outWest or down East, and who can
confidently count on his weekly paper
anyhow.. As the mail boy arrives - at
I the door, there is a ripple of excitement
which extends even to the barefooted
'; boy who has been sent down with three
s big coppers -to 'mail a letter directed in
a- cramped, old-fashioned hand. Otte
!can see by the way he looks from the '=
!letters to the jars of candy ih front of i
the store that he is speculating:" on the
!risks of dropping the missive into the
!river and investing the money where it
will do - ncle Sam no- good. .
There is a hush while the mail is be-
iug distributed. The pampered aristo-
crat who can afford to pay box rent at
the rate -of 40 cents a year keeps his eye
on lis particular box, while the down
trodden citizen, who is compelled to go
int.. the "general delivery," - silently
-argues that the heavier the mail '.bag
the more chance he has of being favor-
, ed. Just at this moment -the post- any
master is ''a bigger man than old • 2u
Graut," or old anybody else, and if he faith
duel not feel at . least ninety -Mae fit, a
per centum of his official importance 3r
it is because he has to stop now and "sor,
then to decipher the superscription of a pers
letter. - 4t1 . D
After what seems an interminable opsn'on 0
delay the window is opened- and a gen- - fit)
erahle rush is made, and in ten minutes and
the only person left cautiously ap- anon
proaches the window and inquires : Ot
"Anything for any of us ?" - 7t1
"Nothing," is the reply as - the letters St
are rapidly over -run. - 9t
-"Anything for b.rb-ther Jim's folks ?" tone -
"Nothing."
