fore and was to return on that day. If
the lad recovers, it will only be through

Perth Items.
The Elora fall show is to be =held
this year at Newry on the 29th of' Sep-
tember.
Ili tchei1 is likely to have a deficit
this year of $3,000. Not a very - nice
luxury for a municipality to indulge in.
--Mrs. P. Shanley, of .Mitchell, one
of the earliest -settlers in that town,
died last week at the age of sixty-two
1 years.
—George Rose threshed 600 bushels
of fall wheat, last -week, on the farm of
Robert Bell, near Trowbridge, in the
township of Elora,., in the short
space of 11 hours. .
—The Mitchell High School trustees
have decided to charge all pupils at-
tending the school a fee of 25 cents per
month. This course has been adopted
for financial reasons. - ,
—The Stratford School Board have
determined to do away with the County
Modelchool, as the experiment was
found to terfere with the efficiency of
the publi schools.
—The annual fall show of • the
North Perth Agricultural Society, is to
be held at Stratford on Thursday, 26th
inst. The. South -Perth show will be
held in St. Marys -on the 12th and 13th
of October.
—Mr. John Corrie is forming a joint
stock company in Stratford, for the
purpose of establishing waterworks and
procuring -a supply of water for domes-
tic purposes from the little lakes east
of the town. .
—The Logan township Council have
leased the gravel road, running north of
Mitchell, to a private person, who in-
tends erecting toll houses and collecting
tolls on it. This will be hard on the
business of Mitchell.
—Daring a thunder storm last week,
the barns and contents, belonging -to
Mr. R. Christie, of the first conces-
sion of Elma, were struck by lightning
and totally destroyed by fire. e' .Loss
$1,600, partially insured in the Water-
loo Mutual.
—A short time ago the Listowel Pub-
lic -Salim -1 trustees advertised for three
female teachers for their school, and
received 5.6 applications. If something
is not speedily dope too get a host of
these female. school teachers married
- off, the country will be over -run with
them.
—Mr. E. A. Cairncross, of Shakes-
peare, sold last week 513 kegs of butter,
aggregating over 14 tons, and netting,
him the handsome- sum of over $4,000,
which lot has been taken in at the store
in exchange for goods within the _ last
two months.
-.-I ayor Cull, of Mitchell, has in his.
possession a piece of ivory, intended for
a parasol handle, which his grandfather
had given to him in India over seventy
years ago., It is beautifully carved, and
is really a ecuriosity, and a wonderful
pieoe of workmanship.
—The Great Western Railway Com-
pany, which formerly kept an agent in
Stratford to look up freight and other
business for that road, have withdrawn
him on account of the Grand Trunk
having got control of the Port Dover
and Listowel roads. No more close com-
petition in rates for Stratford.
—Mr. John Warren, an old and. much
respected resident of Elms township,
died on Thursday morning of last week
from the effects of an accident which
befei him on Monday last,=while on his
way to Carthage. As he Seas appoach-
in that -village his horse ran away,
throwing him out of his vehicle, and
fracturing his spine. -
-11r. R. Jones, of the township of
Logan, has purchased 200 acres of the
Cu11 estate for $9,000, anti Mr. John
Linton has purchased 200 on the . con-
cession opposite for $8,000. These
farms are considered. cheap. They are
situated upon the kith and 7th Conces-
sions three miles and 'a quarter from
the gravel road.
-At a special meeting of the Direc-
tors of the Mitchell, -Fullerton, Hibbert
and Logan Agricultural and Horticul-
tural Society, held on Wednesday; the
llth inst., it was decided to change
the days of the annual show to the
27th and 28th of September next,
in consequence of other .shows con-
flicting with the time previously agreed
upon.
—During the storm which passed
over Ellice on Tuesday afternoon of
last week the bent of Mr. James Bur-
net, concession 16, lot 8, was struck by
lightning; and with the contents and
some stags of Wheatand barley, en-
tirely consumed. So rapidly did the
fire spread that it was with difficulty a
horse whichtwas in the stable was got
out. The loss is estimated at about

—An extraordinary feat of binding
was witnessed on the farm of Mr. Alex-
ander Melville, of the township of Ful-
lerton, a day or two. ago. Money was
bet that George Birrell' could not bind
one Hundred sheaves of grain in ten
minutes. The young man went to
work at a given signal, and ,completed
his task in exactly eight minutes:

bad money up that the work could not
be`done, but he handed over the cash
willingly and cheerfully, expressing his
surprise that sheaves could be tied up
. so quickly. _
—A little son of Mr. W. Leroy, of
Mitchell, hadquite an adventure on
the day of the Sabbath School ex.cur-

somehow was lost sight of by his guar-
dians, and left on the boat on its re -
