JULY 2, 1S80.
Sole Leather.
An eastern trade journal has been en-
quiring into various points connected
with the leather business, and among
other things gave the following inform-
ation about Califoriian and Australian
sole -leather
" The sole -leather tanned on the .Pa-
cific coast differs somewhat from that
produced in any other quarter • of .. the
globe. It is called oak leather by the
tanners, but it differs from both the
Northern and Southern oak of the At-
lantic coast, and forms in this market a
class tui generis known as " California
leather." The tanning interests of Cali-
fornia are receiving considerable atten-
tion, and the People of the Pacific coast,
especially, are sanguine of a brilliant fu-
ture for them. It is estimated that
from 50,000 to 60,000 sides per annum
of this California leather are now re-
rooff, the post office was unroo `: an

ing the late era of high prices the resl.
oeipts were large, but there . are occa-
sions when they almost cease, the leath-
er being at ouch times either COnsumed
at home or exported to Japan, in which
empire quite a market for it exists.
Of course, this California business
amounts to no more than a diminutive
Sea bite in comparison with the sole -
leather trade of the East, but, as already
intimated, the Californians are inclined
to indulge in glowing anticipations in
regard to its future. They say the bark
procured in California is much stronger
than that cut in the East, 'one cord of
the former being equal to two of the
latter. '
" They also urge that, as sulphur wa-
ter improves the quality of the leather
to such a degree, California is fortunate
in having so many places (where natural
sulphur waters are found. The climate,
too, enabling the tanner to carry on his
business without beitrg exposed either
to the intense - cold of winter or 'the
scorching heat of summer, is "very much
in his favor. There is a very largesup-
ply of hides raised in the State, and a
large surplus exists for shipment. to
Eastern tanners.
We have referred to the leather of
Australia in this same connection., not
because any Australian leather comes
to Boston, but because the Californians
have had their attention drawn to the
tanning interests of that distant conti-
nent, and particularly ' to the tanning
material which is used. This material
is what is known ae wattle bark, and is
obtained from four or five species of
acacia. These trees are at their prime
when about ten years old, and are then
nine or ten inches in diameter. The
bark is stripped in the latter part of
April or early in May, and no tree less
than five inches in diameter is disturb-
ed. As the acacia yields not only bark
for tanning, but also a, merchantable
gam and useful wood for cask staves,
wheel spokes, axe handles, ate., the de-
sirability of its introduction in. Califor-
nia and other sections of the United
States is being loudly urged. Thevalue
of the wattle bark is now so well under-
stood in Australia that measures' are to
be taken to prevent the desjtruotibn of
the forests in which it is grown.
wattle -bark trade has been entir
growth of the last fifteen years, an

have not only ceased. but 392,000 Bides
have been imported from other colonies
and even from South Africa in 187. At
the same time,- a large quantity of wat-
tle bark is exported, the amount being
1384 tons in 1872, and over 11,000 tons
in 1879. There are now 96 tanner es in
Victoria, employing about .2,000 men,
and using over 15,000 tons of bark per
annum.
