L.: WHITN 'T` • JULY 2, 1S80. Sole Leather. An eastern trade journal has been en- quiring into various points connected with the leather business, and among other things gave the following inform- ation about Califoriian and Australian sole -leather " The sole -leather tanned on the .Pa- cific coast differs somewhat from that produced in any other quarter • of .. the globe. It is called oak leather by the tanners, but it differs from both the Northern and Southern oak of the At- lantic coast, and forms in this market a class tui generis known as " California leather." The tanning interests of Cali- fornia are receiving considerable atten- tion, and the People of the Pacific coast, especially, are sanguine of a brilliant fu- ture for them. It is estimated that from 50,000 to 60,000 sides per annum of this California leather are now re- rooff, the post office was unroo `: an Steel's blacksmith slop suffeled lik damage. —Aelderly farmer r siding boil th Huron Toad, Goderich towns ip, ha been mu h annoyed of ate byhle los of a number of young chickens; and de, termining to catch ti i thief, if possibi air g last e k o ong h owls is ho e trip. little s big ed wi use of g tern ostracised from society. —One day last weokl the Chief of Police arrested ames t who has `for some tiny a'st bee a chs r, witt d. ma part . He ;discove thief was, bar; at the expi clothes, and also of bei. a ping at Mrs. Grant's o ceived in Boston, though the amount carrying a loaded revply -varies widely from week to week. Dur- l therewith u ilawfully a ing the late era of high prices the resl. oeipts were large, but there . are occa- sions when they almost cease, the leath- er being at ouch times either COnsumed at home or exported to Japan, in which empire quite a market for it exists. Of course, this California business amounts to no more than a diminutive Sea bite in comparison with the sole - leather trade of the East, but, as already intimated, the Californians are inclined to indulge in glowing anticipations in regard to its future. They say the bark procured in California is much stronger than that cut in the East, 'one cord of the former being equal to two of the latter. ' " They also urge that, as sulphur wa- ter improves the quality of the leather to such a degree, California is fortunate in having so many places (where natural sulphur waters are found. The climate, too, enabling the tanner to carry on his business without beitrg exposed either to the intense - cold of winter or 'the scorching heat of summer, is "very much in his favor. There is a very largesup- ply of hides raised in the State, and a large surplus exists for shipment. to Eastern tanners. We have referred to the leather of Australia in this same connection., not because any Australian leather comes to Boston, but because the Californians have had their attention drawn to the tanning interests of that distant conti- nent, and particularly ' to the tanning material which is used. This material is what is known ae wattle bark, and is obtained from four or five species of acacia. These trees are at their prime when about ten years old, and are then nine or ten inches in diameter. The bark is stripped in the latter part of April or early in May, and no tree less than five inches in diameter is disturb- ed. As the acacia yields not only bark for tanning, but also a, merchantable gam and useful wood for cask staves, wheel spokes, axe handles, ate., the de- sirability of its introduction in. Califor- nia and other sections of the United States is being loudly urged. Thevalue of the wattle bark is now so well under- stood in Australia that measures' are to be taken to prevent the desjtruotibn of the forests in which it is grown. wattle -bark trade has been entir growth of the last fifteen years, an The ly a dur- ing the past seven years exports of 1 eth- er from the colony of Victoriahave more than doubled, and exports of hides have not only ceased. but 392,000 Bides have been imported from other colonies and even from South Africa in 187. At the same time,- a large quantity of wat- tle bark is exported, the amount being 1384 tons in 1872, and over 11,000 tons in 1879. There are now 96 tanner es in Victoria, employing about .2,000 men, and using over 15,000 tons of bark per annum. Interesting Items. _ =The Washington census- enu era - tors say that the population of IVa hing- ton will be 143,000, and of the d'strict of Columbia 172,000, an increase 0 40,- 000 in ten years. —Pittsburg social circles were nter- ested on the announcement of the mar- riage of John H. Shoenberger, the 'Iron Sing," to Miss Alice Taylor, of New York. Shoenberger's first wife die two years ago. He is over middle age The bride is . a sister ' of the wife o the rector of Trinity Church. Thinking nothing !about the matter, he walked on, when all at once, and efore he had time to make any defence, the bird dived down and caught his h- t in its claws and carried it aloft. hen the bird•got to the height of the t ees it let the hat drop. A day or two after the young man succeeded in cap uric two hawks in the same place, o • e of them, no doubt, being the thief. They are large blue hawks, and have been sent to Toronto tol be stuffed. —A poor Irish woman went to a venerable priest in Chicago the other day, says the Pilot, and asked hi to forward to Ireland- her help fo the famine sufferers. j "How much ca you spare ?" asked the priest.
