A MILD NIGHT AT NET-.
TLEBY GRANGE.
CHAPTER I.
Nettleby Grange was a pleasant
1 okiug,-gray, old fashioned residence, t
f i1 of gables and ivied ca ements. It
a. ood ina hollow nearly at the bottom
o the vale, audit used to nestle there
✓ tired from neighbors. But, recently,
t i.ings had been changed iu that re-
s:oeet. About a year and a half ago a.l
s eat, srneoth, red brick mansion had
ouilt itself on a hill not half a mile
ay, glittering at all hours of the day
th modern plate -glass windows and
aslting its gilt vanes. At sunset it
often positively blazed, putting all
Cher dwellings far and near out of
untenance. The Grange was annoy -
d, it became enraged—at least Miss
eamish, its mistress, did. For ally
oh purposes, she was the Grange.
.Perhaps Prospect house was a little
' rovoking. .For one thing, .it was mar -
'ed, and the Grange was not, and was
of likes. to be, Miss Beamish was
of solitary ; she had a family in a cer-
tain ways There lived with her a
hudowad sister, Mrs. Sibbert, whose
sband had not died till ho had got
through, her fortune in ill speculations,
but who left her in its place two chal-
drmn. The generous, high-minded oid
i aid had opened the doors oaf the
range to all three. This occurred
i early two years ago. For a brief six
onths Bliss Beamish enjoyed a kind
f domestic glory. Every old-aidish
ain
ir was laid aside. She brightened up,
dressed mote gaily, but in a very -mat-
Only sort of way, and talked in a busy,
tattling manner. She became twice as
ctive . as before, quite fluttering the iillage with her suddenly acquired
amily, as if she, and not her poor,
orn sinter, had brought about the do-
esticity. At church, she marshalled
ate and Willie down the aisle before
loterg their real mother coming weakly -in
he rear of all. It is true there was
omethi.ng slightly ridiculous in this
'ng. With. Willie, a boy of &boat
ourteen, she might have carried it off ;
at Miss Kate was taller than her aunt
y a, head, and. Her elegant beauty at-
ratted all eyes, the ancient mistress
of the Grange really being only half
seen.
But Miss Beamish's triumph in these
rays, even such as it . was, only lasted
or the brief tine we have named.
rospect House was finished, and Mr.
ud Mrs. Dixon, with a. real, complete,
roperly presided over family, took
asaession of it. Besides Mr. Dixon,
all,_ genial, intelligent, and Mrs. Dix-
ri, portly and inclined to patronize,
here were three daughters, one of diem
n,ly a little less hand.sonie than Kate
ibbert, and, finally, - one son, a good
ooking young fellow, his father over
gain, with the advantages of being
limmer, active and fresh. 'Confronted
ivith their carriage and its pair of high -
tepping horses, the pony carriage from
he Grange looked shabby, or if it did
iiot, it was because Kate was in it. At
4-hurcla the Dixous made a larger,
ore imposing procession the pew bey filled was nearer the pulpit, for
hey had bought that belonging to the
lel ruined Manor House. Indeed,
rospect House seemed to have money
or anything. Mr. Dixon was a larges
