The Listowel town band has been
reorganized, and now numbers upwards
of 30 members.
—Pullman & , Hamilton's combina-
tion show attracted large crowds to
Listowel last week.
—Rev. Dr. Caven; of Toronto, preach-
ed in the Widder street Presbyterian
church. St. Marys, on Sunday, the 23rd
ult.
—A bylaw prohibiting cows from
running at large, was passed by . the
Stratford. Council without a dissenting
voiceA.

husband were the silbject of much fun
on the Mitchell Driving Park on Queen's
Birthday.
The Stratford constables impound-
ed fifty head of cattle and horses a few
nights ago. Great excitement the next
morning.
—The crops in the vicinity of - Tavi-
stock never looked better, and if noth-
ing unforeseen occurs, the harvest will
be a splendid one.
- Queen's birthday was celebrated
with; becoming eclat in Stratford, Mit-
chell, St. Marys, Listowel and several
other places of lesser note:.
—It is said a Miss Card, a former re-
sident of St. Marys, has fallen heir to a
fortune of $30,000. Here is a "trump
Card" for some gallant swain.
—On the evaning of the 24th May, a
social was held in the Methodist church
at West Monckton, at which $30 were
realized for the benefit of the church.
—The establishment of a -match fac-
tory in Listowel was discussed last
week at a special meeting of the Town
Council and others. No definite action
was taken.
—Mr. Registrar Whelihan, of St.
Marys,. has purchased the farm of Mr.
John Berry, lot 21; concession 12, Ful-
lerton, which was sold -under a wort
'gage, fer the sum of $4,000. _
—Mr. George Cleland, son of the er-
Reeve of Elma, sold the other -day to
the drovers, two cows from his herd,
which together weighed two thousand
six hundred and forty pounds.
-On the 24th a base ball match
tock place between two junior nines,
-representing Listowel and Palmerston.
• The Listowel players, known as the
"Blue Jays, won the match by a score
of 32 to 15.
—The ladies' aid association of Knox
church; St. Marys, held a very success-
ful garden party at the residence of Mr.
Alex. Smith,- River Road, Blanshard,
On the evening of the 21th. - Something
over $80 was realized.
—While a number of young mien were,
engaged raising a barn on the farm of
Mr. Bearingei , Mornington, one of the
number, Edward Reid, fell off the beam
on to a sleeper, bruising his- legs and
otherwise injufin,g himself. .
—It is feared that the wheat crop in
Mornington will be a failure all through
the township this year, although in
places where the ;round is well drained
a good field may -be seen. A great deal
of it has been plowed up and the land
sown with barley. - ..
—The Elrna cheese and butter man-
ufacturing company made a good sale
of cheese lately. The first half of the
May make, amounting to . 10,188 lbs.,
was solid to Mr. Andrew Aitchison, for
'llic per pound. Several of the other
factories in Elm.a made sales to Mr.,
Aitchison at the same time.
-While the races were going ? on in
the Driving Park at Listowel, on the
Queen's Birthday, Master R. Davidson
was thrown off one of the horses, which
stumbled and -fell on the course. His
shoulder was, dislocated by the fall,
and it was for sometime thought that,
he had received other - serious injuries,
but be is recovering.
—On Thursday morning last week,
Mr. Josiah Murphy; of Logan, .sold - to!.
Messrs.. Rowel and McIntosh, of St.
Thomas, 61 head of fat cattle, that he
has fed on his premises in .Logan for -
.
the last six and a half months. The:
drove were all steers, and - averaged'
1,282 pounds, aggregating 78,222 pounds,
for which Mr. Murphy received 5/c
per pound, realizing the nice sum of
$4,302.21.
—Two young men, named John E.
Soper and Wm. Richardson, said' to
hail from Listowel or vicir ity; who have
been keeping'•bach""- in Drayton, have
• been arrested. A quantity of stolen
goods were found in their possession,
muchof it stolen from residents of
Drayton and vicinity during their short
residence in the village. • They have
been sent for trial.
—A. fellow named Johnston Barr;
drove a horse attached to a buggy at s.
furious rate through the streets of Mile
vf1ertonuring an entire afternoon, and
in the evening his folly seemed to reach
its climax, when he started off to Mil -
bank, but ere he reached - that villag
his horse dropped dead - upon the roa .
If there is a lawKfor the prevention f
cruelty to animals, this man - ought to
suffer the extreme penalty. -
—On Sunday night a man went t
the house of Mrs. Simpson, who lives
in Townie, near Stratford, and knocked
at the door.. He was refused admi:,t-
tance, bat beat in the door, and violent-
ly assaulted Mrs. Simpson, who is n
old woman nearly 70. As - soon as
had gene, she made her way to a neig
bor's, who went out in search of tie
ruffian, but tailed to find him.- Infor-
mation was given to High Constable
McCarthy, who has good hopes' of
catching the fellow and - bringing h
to justice. He deserves severe puni.
