Dangers _to Steamers.
The breaking down of machinery has
probably been the cause of more dis-
asters than is generally suspected. It
is well known that the first-class trans-
atlantic steamers, provided , with he
most powerful engines, have often in
very heavy weather as much as t ey
can do to keep their coarse in sat _ty.
It will readily b& seen ` that unc er-
engined cargo steamers must, under
similar circumstances, adapt themselves
to a safe and practicable coni se, and
r. can, when steaming full power ahead,
only just manage to keep their posi-
tions, and may, even in spite of all ex-
ertions, drift astern. If in these cases
the engines thus heavily strained be-
come temporarily disabled, the vessel
will refuse to answer her helm, and she
will inevitably :fall off into the trough
of the sea, and be placed in the greatest
danger. The same thing • will happen,
even if the engines work well, provided
anything goes wrong with -the steering -
gear, which is often of an intricate
character.—Eature.
Novel Sermon.
All hope of the training ship Atalanta
has been given up, the different vessels
despatched in search (of her having re-
turned from their -fruitless mission.
The sad event -has` been seized upo by
Spurgeon, who has hung upon it a very
curious piece .of sermonizing, taking as
his text "The sea is His and He made
it.•' Mr. Spurgeon ridicule the 'idea
of the fear of the ocean, which is e ter--
tained by so many, as un worth of
Christians :

disciples went to sea. He was ord
