Trig I-URON EXPOSITOR Intended Resignation_ of the more and Queen. andout o As it is always interesting to ku(ow Imagine what the Queen says, I give the foll and to th ing extract which is just now run 'ng through the French papers: They de- ljeges all • Clare that, in talking of the Emp ess man walk Eugenie the other day, the Queen said : now, wor.' "I have always yearned for oultuFed and more great Dar evolution tion of Di egs with rudiment Ydession,. I shall feel that I have dine not our my part, and I shall hand on the crown muscles f any use sorbed by will acqui of a carie tion of th and.useful retirement since the deat the Prince Consort, but- every day- brought aybrought new duties, and I have b unable to shrink. If God spares me celebrate the golden jubilee of my of nas Sen -to ac - to its next' possessor with a feeling that lam securing the bestinterests of the nation over whose destinies I have pre- sided so long, and the prosperity of whichis so dear to me." If this is true the Queen does not intend to reign more than another seven years.—London G'or- re.spondent. Dangers _to Steamers. The breaking down of machinery has probably been the cause of more dis- asters than is generally suspected. It is well known that the first-class trans- atlantic steamers, provided , with he most powerful engines, have often in very heavy weather as much as t ey can do to keep their coarse in sat _ty. It will readily b& seen ` that unc er- engined cargo steamers must, under similar circumstances, adapt themselves to a safe and practicable coni se, and r. can, when steaming full power ahead, only just manage to keep their posi- tions, and may, even in spite of all ex- ertions, drift astern. If in these cases the engines thus heavily strained be- come temporarily disabled, the vessel will refuse to answer her helm, and she will inevitably :fall off into the trough of the sea, and be placed in the greatest danger. The same thing • will happen, even if the engines work well, provided anything goes wrong with -the steering - gear, which is often of an intricate character.—Eature. Novel Sermon. All hope of the training ship Atalanta has been given up, the different vessels despatched in search (of her having re- turned from their -fruitless mission. The sad event -has` been seized upo by Spurgeon, who has hung upon it a very curious piece .of sermonizing, taking as his text "The sea is His and He made it.•' Mr. Spurgeon ridicule the 'idea of the fear of the ocean, which is e ter-- tained by so many, as un worth of Christians : The Lordhimself, he said, and His disciples went to sea. He was ord High Admiral of the waters, an He et never give up His rank. He owne the y sea by right of creation, but he gave. men dominion over it and the fish thereof. If none ever crossed the eep, row could man have dominion t + ere ? Man was meant toplough the se as well as the land. Man was t od's viceroy, holding under the .ging and paying a. quit rent of ad?ration a d. re- verence. Prince -Leopold.
